10th July : Night Kayaking along The Thames to Big Ben

  • Jul 10, 2014 · 6:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

The Thames really is at its most beautiful as the daylight fades, and London's reflection shimmers on its dark waters. This trip is normally planned around the tides, this trip will be out against te tide and returning with the tide and paddling down river to see Albert Bridge , the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament in all their splendor before returning to our base at Chelsea on the new flood tide.

We run this trip in highly stable boats, so no experience is required, and our expert guides will help you master the basics of boat control during your journey.

Roughly two and a half hours, including briefing time and kitting out

Includes initial tuition, all specialist equipment, including appropriate illumination.

Payment is by paypal when you RSVP

Remember that you should be aware of and accept  any risks as you are responsible for your own safety and you should not undertake anything beyond your abilities. It is also your responsibility to be correctly equipped for the weather and activity you have chosen to participate in.
Everyone in the group has to obtain appropriate insurance.

The BMC offer excellent policies for all outdoor enthusiasts at competitive rates.

6.30pm Meet at Cremorne Riverside Centre, Cremorne Gardens, SW10 0QH

Facilities exist to get changed prior to hitting the water.

Briefing, kitting out and pairing up ready to depart in your two person kayak.

6.45 pm Everyone is required to be present at this time for the breifing and to be kitted out with life vest and other kit.

We reserve the right to depart without people if they have not arrived at this time.  The delays experienced on other kayaking evenings like this mean that it impacts upon those that arrive on time.

9.00pm Approx finish time

Those requiring liquid and food refreshment afterwards can join us at a local bars afterwards. Details to follow.

I have reserved space for post event drinks & food if required

Details to follow..

Based inside Cremorne Gardens on the junction of Lots Road and Cremorne Road.

By Bus – Best option – it’s a five minute walk from Battersea Bridge, or the Worlds End stop on the Kings Road.

By Overground - Imperial Wharf overground station is around a 7 minute walk, and can be reached via Clapham Junction or Shepherd’s Bush mainline stations, or by changing from the London Underground system at West Brompton (District Line).

By Tube - Fulham Broadway and Sloane Square tube stations are both around a 15 – 20 minute walk away.

By Bike - Cyclist can lock their bikes within the facilities grounds.

By Bigger Bikes - Motorcycle parking bays exist within Kensington & Chelsea, some are free other marked Resident require a permit. So check.  At the time of writing there is a bay located on Lotts Rd at the junction of Ashburnham Rd.

By Car – Drivers, Car Parks near here aren’t nearby so I’ll leave you to research that one. On street parking exists. Pay and Display bays exist and require payment between 8.30 am and 6.30 pm.  Outside this time they are free to park in Pay & Display bays and possible Residents bays but check locally.

I have included a link for drivers to locate parking info. Just enter Lotts Road into the address and you will see the parking options.

Footwear. Shoes that don’t matter if they gets wet or muddy or both. Ideally an old pair of trainers. Open toe shoes are not recommended, unless your toes have a high pain tolerance.

Clothing. Track suit, running trousers or hiking trousers work well. Garments made of manmade fibres that don’t hold moisture like cotton will keep you warmer if you get wet.

Warm hat if the weather looks like it will be cold or you have no or little hair!!

Fleeces and thermal tops are ideal. Avoid wool and cotton tops.

Towel & shower kit

Dry clothes to change into after the session

Sense of humor

Padlock. The centre boasts hot showers and changing rooms, with lockers for your valuables, just bring along a small padlock.

Capsizes are rare as the boats are very stable, and you should stay dry, but splashes are common!

You might also like to bring some water, snack and waterproof camera.  The center do take out a waterproof camera and will provide me with photos afterwards which I’ll post.

The consumption of alcohol prior to the event is unwise and dangerous for you and your kayak partner and the center will reserve the right to refuse people under the influence of alcohol.

Do we have to get insurance for this (thought the centre would have that covered)? I didn't realise that it was necessary when I paid, also the link to the BMC doesn't mention insurance for kayaking
