August Grand Gaming Melee and Potluck

To judge by July, August will be the sort of heat that makes you want to stay inside. So stay inside playing your favorite games at the Central Library in Arlington.

As always, boardgames of all types, makes, models, and flavors are welcome. Eurogames, card games, strategy games, social games, bring em all. Or, bring nothing and learn a new game.

Pot-luck snacks and drinks. Please bring a delicious thing to share. Last time, some first-timers brought a cheese tray, crackers, and grapes. They are an example to all of us. Let's up our game.

The fun begins at 10:30 and we should wrap up by 4:30. Come when you can and play as much as you want.

Sorry I couldn't stay to see the Last Night on Earth to the bitter(?) end. But, I hope my spiritual successor let that redneck realize his full potential anyway. :D So, who won? The zombies or the humans?

    August 17, 2013

    • Dawn R.

The zombies. Us humans killed 13 of them, but then they managed to kill Steve, and with the second hero lost the zombies won the day.

Aww... The "Father" went first?? Shoulda just thrown him my meat cleaver, even if there was a possibility he would've been caught in the throw as collateral along with the zombies. :P

Great meetup. Thank you to the kind person who took time away from playing games to help 5 tyros learn Steam. Sorry didn't get your name.

Very nice event! This is a board game event where the majority of the games are designed for a play period of 1 to 2.5 hours so settle in for a bit!

Best Melee Ever! (Please ignore all my earlier notes declaring previous Melees the best ever.)

Im recovering from bronchitis and won't be able to attend.

Sorry to hear that. Get some rest and hope to see you at the next meetup! :)

    I'm an Event Host!

William, the ceremonial robe & sceptre were NOT in the kit you gave me! I trust you'll deliver them to me forthwith.

Attention AARGG: I am declaring attendance at this event MANDATORY for all members! Janna, please alert the library that we need the entire building, not just the auditorium. Players should form a single line at the entrance. Steve Jackson, please assign them to games & tables as they arrive (no, you can't assign all of them to Steve Jackson games). Shawn, please assign everyone a snack time to avoid traffic jams at the food & drink table.

Everyone, please coordinate among yourselves so you don't bring the same games. Duplicate games will be destroyed. Duplicate food is acceptable as long as it's something I like. Anyone bringing smoked salmon gets his choice of (a) an extra action on every turn in Pandemic, (b) a 20% discount on connection fees in Power Grid, or (c) the Inflatable Raft in Forbidden Island, but only if he brings enough for everyone.

Sorry, William's a Host. You can't eat a Host. That's a rule I just invented when I became Host. Hosts can do that. Don't argue with the Host.

I just picked up Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition and plan to bring it. I'm still reading through the instructions, so if there is anyone who has played it before and would like to teach the game, let me know. Here's a link to the instruction: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=176&esem=4

Typical to an RPG, it says in the rulebook a campaign takes over 20 hours. I'm guessing we're just going to do one quest as a single session? BTW, I can fully commit to the entire campaign, which is about 9 separate quests, if we can keep the meetup locations close to this one.

I was going to say that it might be better suited for a regular play night situation due to its episodic nature.

  • David P. M.

Sorry but my wife & son & I will not be able to arrive until 1:00 PM at the earliest.

    August 15, 2013

    • Andrew Y.

Np... people arrive and leave whenever they can, so folks just get a game together on the fly.

Is anyone planning on bringing Eclipse? I've been very curious about picking that game up if it's as good as I've heard!

Cosmic Encounter is awesome! I have it, and will bring it!

Damn Ed I'll be sticking with you because I've been desperately wanting to try out CE as well.

I'll be bringing City of Horror. I bought the game like two months ago and haven't had a chance to play it yet!

Ixion: what's a "card at the Discworld Convention"? Is it a game? BTW, is there actually a Discworld convention in the States?

    July 20, 2013

    • Cathy

Unfortunately, Terry ended up as a last minute phone-in via Skype. I found the business cards sitting on the gaming guild table which was a brilliant marketing idea. While the Discworld con was nice, it was a bit subdued. It could have used an adrenaline shot.

      August 1, 2013

    • H.Z.

That's too bad. Hope Terry is doing alright. Someone like him, a fine example of a human being, should not have to leave this world too early.

  • H.Z.

In case conveniently shaped chicken wing nuggets are again not available that weekend, how do you guys feel about a WHOLE chicken? BTW, I really don't have suitable meat knives available...

July's melee weather was actually surprisingly nice. A few of us ended up playing in the park outside after the event, until close to sunset. Let's hope August's weather isn't quite as killer hot as it is now.

    July 20, 2013

    • David L

H.Z., the more I think about this (I don't have much else to do between Melees), the more I think that a whole chicken that needs to be carved is not a great idea. Leaving a big carving knife out for the General Public to use gives me premonitions of the librarian coming in to admonish us to bleed quietly, stop doing 'that thing with the knife' from "Aliens," and insist that fingers go in the trash bin, not recycling. If chicken chunks aren't possible, how about some melon chunks? There's no cooking necessary, which is always a bonus in August!

      August 11, 2013

    • H.Z.

What's wrong with a little *meat* in your meat? Or we could just close our eyes and pretend those chopped fingers are carrots.
Seriously though, there's no need to worry, David. I was only considering it as an alternative in case nothing better was available, but I can always try to find something else.

Hopefully someone will bring Tales of Arabian Nights. :)

    July 29, 2013

    • David L

I will be happy to bring mine, but I do not expect to play it during this event. Tales of the Arabian Nights can be an all-day game, and as Event Host I plan to keep my schedule fairly flexible. During the day I'll join in some shorter games while leaving myself time to welcome newbies, explain to curious library patrons that AARGG is not a cult, correct players' grammar and spelling, break up fistfights, and transmit scores to the NSA.

      July 29, 2013

    • David L

I'm pleased to report that I've completed my custom expansion set for Tales of the Arabian Nights. It was inspired by some deficiencies in the otherwise excellent base game: not enough Skill tokens, an inventory of only two female and four male characters, and conflicts in combinations of Status and/or Treasure cards that generally require analysis and debate to resolve.

With the expansion there are now six of each Skill token. I've created more characters for a total of six female and six male (the game still only supports six players). There's a new sheet of background stories for the new characters, and I've written some additional rules that suggest resolutions for specific Status/Treasure conflicts.

I plan to upload the new rules on the Files page so other people can use and comment on them, but I'll do this after I get reactions from people who see the initial version on Saturday. Of course, feel free to play with my expanded game but ignore my new rules if you prefer.
