WHAT IS ALEC AND WHY SHOULD AAUW CARE?

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) (www.alec.org) is composed of conservative state legislators and private sector business people and their goal is to promote model bills in the states, for example, to reduce taxes, tighten voter identification rules and promote gun rights.

Is ALEC a “nonpartisan membership association of conservatives who share a common belief in limited government, free markets, federalism, and individual liberty” as they claim on their website? OR Is it a “dating agency for Republican
state legislators and big corporations, bringing them together to frame right wing legislative agendas in the form of ‘model bills?” as recently described in The Guardian? Let’s find out what impact ALEC has on AAUW’s public policy
agenda.
