Sara Douglass does beginnings much better than endings, and this book is no exception. Currently you will probably have to get this book used, but it's worth the search.

A Deepness in the Sky was the Vinge book we discussed today... well worth reading, set in the same universe as A Fire Upon the Deep.

I wanted to add something that I don't think I made clear at the meeting- when I get really into a book I no longer see the words. It's a complete visual experience, so that's why I didn't notice the repetitive hammering home of points. I like books that are well written, but I love novels that transport me to somewhere else.
Sorry I didn't show. Not really my sort of book, stalled out bout halfway through, and I lack the chutzpah to show up and discuss a book I haven't finished. "Canticle" seems more my speed: see you in a month!
You never need to worry about not being finished- unless spoilers worry you. There's always people that haven't finished/started the selection.
got swarmed by a bunch of what appear to be fire ants over the weekend. having a bad reaction.

Got to the end of this one... this is EXACTLY why I almost never read books marketed as "Book one in the XXXXXX series." While i found it well written, things happen at a glacial pace and I'm not willing to commit to another 900 pages just to find out what should have happened by page 350.

Just finished the book. As a lover of English history, I enjoyed the accurately depicted descriptions of life in 14th C England - even though things happened at different times and a little differently in the alternate universe of this book. Unfortunately, I'd have to read the next book or two in the series to get my questions answered and I don't think I'm wiling to do that.
