After-work Rappel Practice

  • Nov 13, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • Cara way bridge near I-15 with Mercy Road intersection

Come out after work to learn how to rappel or to improve your current skills. We will have ropes set up from 5ft to 80ft and we'll use them to discuss safety and practice basic techniques used for canyoneering and caving.
People with no prior rappelling experience should join us first hour. The rest of the time will be dedicated to experienced folks that want to practice more technical skills. If you have any specific topic that you would like me to cover let me know and I will try to have a special session on it.
If you have any technical equipment (helmet, gloves, harness, descenders, ascenders, ropes) bring it. If you don't have any that's ok, I'll have several different type of gear you can borrow and practice with.
SPECIAL FOCUS: this practice is in preparation for upcoming canyon trips for that weekend & thanksgiving

4pm-5pm: Basic rappeling techniques for canyoneering/caving
5pm-7pm: Canyoneering/Caving techniques (rope management, self-rescue, ascending)
Show up at the time you're most interested in, but allocate at least 1h to practice. Sunset is at 5pm! Bring a headlamp and a sweater in case you stay till after dark.
LOCATION: Cara Way Bridge, map of parking spot
Directions: Take Scripps Poway Parkway exit from I15 and head east, make a U-turn at first light and immediately after passing Chili's enter Cara Way. Park where road widens and splits into two drives and walk to bridge

All my activities are run as a group of friends that get together to have fun and learn from each other with no fees involved. My vertical practices may provide you the minimum skill required to tag along on beginner trips but are no substitute for professional training. I have 10 years of caving and canyoneering experience and I've descended hundreds of fantastic caves and canyons all over the world. I am also a Search & Rescue volunteer for the San Bernardino Sheriff, trained in High Angle, Mountain and Desert rescue, Wilderness First Aid and CPR certified. I will love to share with you all that I know, but keep in mind YOUR SAFETY IS ALWAYS YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY!

Canyon this Saturday will be Bonita Falls. It has 200ft rappels in water. water is expected to be low but wetsuit is still recommended. If you are REALLY macho then waterproof pants and jacket might suffice. I could try to loan some stuff. If interested email me at [masked]

Bummer, I have to work this weekend. I'll have to catch the next one. Enjoy! That first rap looks awesome.
