Vegas Skills Practice Day

  • Dec 14, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Looking out my window at the blowing snow and thinking I really should be in the desert somewhere, like maybe Vegas … Next Saturday? But what will I use as an excuse to drive down? Getting together with some meetup group canyoneers to practice skills.

• Anchors

• Rigging

• Pothole Escapes

• Ascending

• Self-Rescue

Cost? You have two options ...

Option A: Bring a Santa costume, or reindeer costume, or elf costume, for photo/video op, along with a toy to be donated to Toys for Tots for Christmas.

Option B: Join the CISN TimeBank, once your membership is approved, go to "Give and Receive" > "Record an Exchange" and give 2 hours (TimeBank Credits) to user CISN for "Canyoneering" > "Mentoring". Doesn't  matter if you don't have hours in your account yet. When we meet on Saturday I'll give you some ideas for earning those hours serving your community -- whether it's your canyoneering community, local food bank, homeless shelter, or ?

Hey Rich: Dan, Mike, Steve, Brandon, and Nicole (the latter 3 you haven't met) all gathered at a local crag here in White Rock, NM. So, we were with you all in spirit.

We practiced lift to lower and haul for single and double strand on a 50' sport climbing route. It has a nice ledge up by the anchor where two people can clip-in and work.

We were able to lift pretty easily using a 2:1 with just one person. One person could haul using a 3:1, but it was pretty hard. With a 2:1 attached to a 3:1 one person could haul fairly easily. Two people had no problem hauling with a 3:1.

It was great to practice this on a vertical plane (yeah, we're all Engineers).

Hey Rich! I think we all would love to have you come out here. I'll find out this evening which dates are open if you also want to give a presentation to our mountaineering club.

Rich: Know that Judy and you are welcome to stay at our place. With the kids grown and gone, we have plenty of room.

Rich and Judy, it was so nice to finally meet you! Thank you for organizing such a fun event and giving so generously of your time and knowledge. We will make certain to "pay it forward". We hope all the good you have done and continue to do for others, comes back to you many times over!
Couldn't have asked for a prettier day to enjoy with old and new canyoneering friends. Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge and time. Happy holidays and hope to see everyone soon!

Awesome day with a great group of people. I knew it was going to be fun as soon as I saw so many of you already wearing your santa costumes in the parking lot. Didn't count, but I think we collected around 20-25 toys for Toys for Tots in Vegas. Looking forward to the next time our paths cross. Merry Christmas everyone.

Hello All - we will meet everyone at Lone Rock as we have to leave early - have company flying in at 4pm. Does anyone have directions to the Lone Rock area (where we will be practicing) from the Valley of Fire entrance? Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone!

And remember, once IN the park, no more highway speed driving, so allow a lot of time to get to the trailhead. See you guys tomorrow! :-)

this came from RC this am

We will be practicing at the Lone Rock area in Valley of Fire State Park. There is a $10 per vehicle fee, so car pooling will be a good idea. We can meet in the Walmart parking lot on 6570 East Lake Mead Blvd. I will arrive there around 8:00 and stay until 8:30 to help organize car pools. Not sure yet if I will be driving my copper-colored Honda Element (canyoneering graphics on side, Utah "Totem" plates) or my wife's white Jeep Cherokee with Yakima bars on top. Look for either vehicle.

can anyone confirm this waypoint, its just a guess...

From the carpool location to the entrance gate is about 49 miles. So - depends how fast you drive! And also of course where you live in relation to that location.

    • Rich C.

Oh! I didn't bother measuring the distance. Thank you for posting this. Means I won't hang around the car pool location until 8:30. Anyone who wants to meet for car pooling needs to be there by 8:00.

Very informal gathering. People can come and go as they please. If you know you need to leave early, plan your car pooling accordingly.

Here's your wish Sarah! Hubby and I are going to be too tight on time Sat., we have to give up our spots. Sad to miss this great opportunity, but will look forward to future events! Have a wonderful day out there everyone!!

hoping a spot opens! would love to join! this sounds great

    December 8, 2013

  • Rich C.

Wow, this filled up more quickly than I expected. Please, if you discover you can't make it, come here and change your RSVP right away to free up a spot for someone on the waiting list.

  • bruce from b.

Hey Rich, I'm on the waiting list. Why not Calico Basin as then there is no need to enter Red Rock and have passes to account for everyone!

    1 · December 8, 2013

  • Brett K.

Thanks for your time, Rich. I'm going to wait for an opportunity to spend more time learning about pothole escapes.

    December 8, 2013

    • Rich C.

Sometime in the spring I'll organize a trip going UP Yankee Doodle. Every rappel and down climb will become a pothole escape problem.

      December 8, 2013

    • Brett K.

That sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe we can hit Hidden Star too and actually do the pothole as an escape situation rather than stemming over it.

      December 8, 2013

  • Corey T.

Wish I could make it but I'll be in Laughlin racing
