I always enjoy a day out in a canyon with this group. Thanks for arranging it, Kirk.

So, I live in Fresno which is about 5/6 hours away from San Diego. I was wondering if it'd be possible for me to be put in to an earlier group since I'll be driving home Sunday because I have class in the morning on Monday. Would that be feasible?

I had something come up. I'm going to need to go with one of the first groups today I'm going to drive up there early and see if I can jump in with them

Do we need a wetsuit? I know it doesn't say it's needed in the description, but I get cold...

    November 3, 2012

    • John C.

The last time I did this canyon was in July. Water level was low, so I don't think you'll need the wetsuit. You could bring some fleece, if you want. The forecast says high will be 80's.

  • Raquel A.

Hi... Can you put me with the 8am group?

    November 3, 2012

  • Raquel A.

    Hi
I just signed up and was wondering if I'm on the wait list or going? Shows here i'm going and on another says i'm on the wait list :)

Kirk will want to know which group you want to go with. He can be messaged by clicking on his pic in the column to the right.

    • Kirk

I already sent her an email, thx.

The meetng place for group A (7 a.m.) is at the Trailhead as described in the link...correct? Let me know the address if it is somewhere else so I can pop it into the GPS. Planning to leave Bakersfield at 5 a.m. so will be mostly on autopilot....

    October 31, 2012

    • Kirk

Yes. a T intersection of Mira Monte and Mt Wilson road, the stem of the T pointing north. There's a park to the east where people may be hanging out. You will need to distinguish canyoneers (helmets, ropes, and gear) from the many trail hikers and trail runners that will be going up that morning. AND, it's a residential neighborhood. Let's be quiet.

Group C carpool departs Mission Bay runner's bathroom at 6:00am.
ETA at Bean Town Coffee 45 N. Baldwin, Sierra Madre (on the left side) 8:15. Grab breakfast bowl, review anchors, knots. T/H at 9:00am. My cell[masked]

All groups will emphasize natural anchors. As for group preferences, I will be tracking the responses, and will send out or post a confirmation roster as we get closer. Thanks in advance for your patience - it's a lot of people.

    October 24, 2012

    • Sir R

      Group B, please.

      October 24, 2012

  • John C.

Kirk, Responding your your email, I would opt for Group C. Several of us want to do the canyon au naturel. No, not that way, using natural anchors! We'll need a little more time to fix the anchors, so we should go last. Right now I have Joe, Cat, myself and Chris R. (maybe). Anyone who wants to join us, let me know. Last anchor will be a macrame, retrievable, but it will be safetied off for everyone but the last, uh, me. Carpool would leave later, but have some time for the Bean Town breakfast and a short practice in the park. lunch afterwards may depend on when we get out. Earlier groups may want to chow down before we exit.

FYI: This event is near LA (Sierra Madre) not San Diego.

    October 18, 2012

  • Mike L.

I'll be leaving from Costa Mesa if anyone wants to carpool.

    October 16, 2012

    • John G.

Mike I am in Orange and would like to join the carpool. Can meet you somewhere. Thanks John

      October 16, 2012

    • Mike L.

Sounds good. we'll set something up a few days before

      October 17, 2012

  • Bianca

We have enough ppl on the list to have a rondy at Little Santa Anita~! Can some of the more experience folks on the waiting list help guide a group? You know who you are...

    October 15, 2012

    • Bianca

Thanks Kirk for extending your group format!

Do you know if there will be water flowing at this time? Is wetsuit needed?

      October 16, 2012

    • Kirk

It is impossible to say how anyone reacts to the cold. You know your tolerance to cold best. Think of it as climbing around rocks on the seashore and wading in shin-high water, with maybe an occasional slip-and-sit in the water. Is it a warm and sunny day? Is it a cold and overcast with a sharply chill wind? It depends. Read the forecast, prepare for variable conditions, and recall that a canyon is a slot that may see little sun and may channel wind.

    Any suggestions for a location?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
