Welcome to Excursions of Escalante!
With the Advanced Course, guests can anticipate long days in the canyons with practical training in "keeper pothole" escapes, safe natural anchors, extended rappels (up to 300 ft.) and other advanced canyon "problems". Canyon leadership roles, spotting and risk assessment are just a few of the many other valuable topics covered in the course. If you have completed the ACA Technical Course and are proficient with those skills, then you are ready take the Advanced Course.
Early mornings are spent in an outdoor classroom setting learning the skill set for that day. Mid- morning we head out to the canyons to begin applying your newly learned skills out on the rocks and in the canyons. The first morning begins at 8AM and ends around 5pm-6pm. The second day begins at 8:30AM and ends between 5pm-6pm. This course has a 12 person maximum, 10 Students and 2 Instructors.
Topics covered are taken from the ACA's Level 3 Skills Checklist including:
Students will also learn how to ascend with only one ascender, how to pass a knot while ascending or rappelling, how to convert a rappelling anchor to an efficient ascending anchor, how to transition from rappelling to ascending and from ascending while at mid-rope.
Students will learn, partner assists, cheater sticks, pack tosses and direct aid climbing using hooks or fixed placements.
Advanced Anchors and Ropework:
Topics covered include advanced knots and anchor systems, rigging and using retrievable anchor systems, advanced techniques for rope deployment, efficient rope management, multi-pitch rappels, sequencing and pre-rigged rappels, combination rappel and passive lower for long drops, advanced rope work for traverses and extremely strong water current, direct aid climbing techniques, guided rappels, rebelays, deviations, and strategies for first descents.
Topics covered include avoiding rescue situations by pre-rigging for contingencies, assisted/tandem rappels, converting static blocks to lowering systems, converting static blocks to haul systems, converting contingency rigging to haul systems and improvised carry techniques.
