Tough Mudder October - Training Session

Hi All. Nischal and I are putting together a team to participate in Tough Mudder in October. The event is held in Sydney on 12 and 13 October. It is a 20km obstacle course full of walls, barbed wire and of course, mud! We haven't yet decided whether we will be participating on the Saturday 12 or Sunday 13 but will update once established. The courses itself will be challenging and is described at 'Ironman meets Burning Man' however as a team I have no doubt we can push ourselves and conquer it. People with any level of fitness are welcome (I am starting from a very unfit place!) as we will meet on either a weekly or fortnightly basis to exercise and get fit together. Nischal has kindly offered to run these session to whip us into shape (in a very friendly and supportive manner :) )

First training session is for an hour on Saturday 4 May at 10am on the shore of lake burley griffin. Meet at the carpark near questacon. At this point we will work out how often we want to meet and when best suits everyone.

    Thanks Nisch (and all). That was fun, even if I appear tentative. I've just never had an injury that just won't go away, so I'll be a little coy until I figure out my limits. Looking forward to next week. I'm happy to buy some mitts etc. if they are not too pricey. Is there any particular type we should ask for or a shop that is particularly good to buy them from? I've never bought a set.

    Re: Boxing - some ppl have gloves and mitts and some don't - i have a pair but what are ppl's thoughts on buying a pair of boxing gloves and mitts for themselves to bring to the class? it doesn't have to be expensive and its something that can always be used in the future. I'f you can borrow a pair thats cool too, just let me know your thoughts so when we do have boxing, everyone can participate. Have a great weekend and week everyone. No doubt i'll see you all at another event but i'm looking forward to next week already !

    Next week: We will do more of cardio, strength and pilates but a different routine to mix things up. We may do some of the previous exercises but slightly more advanced and/or more reps but remember its a 5 month building process. Homework: I would like you do an existing or new exercise for the week and tell us about it when we meet again. It can be anything (and no Goff, it has to be decent!) but something you feel you've achieved in. i.e. lifted 10 kgs dumbells for 3 sets (previous was 8 kgs) or ran 5kms in x time (previous was y) or got back into doing rowing or went to the gym 2-3 times this week or started a new exercise etc. Even if you start small, its a start and will keep you motivated through the week.

    Hi fellow Tough Mudders ! Thank you all for coming this morning. It was really awesome to see everyone in the group motivating each other and giving today a real go. I'm excited to think how fit everyone will be come the Tough Mudder event, even though not everyone will do it, training together and reaching our individual goals will be truly awesome and inspiring to all. As such, i would like to turn our Perspiration into Inspiration !
    Today we did:
    6 circle runs + bursts of sprints & hill sprints
    7 mins Block Tabata with pushups + tricep dips + abs work + butterfly situps
    12 mins Hill Climbs - 7 climbs + squats + burpees + situps
    Abs - Plank with pulses + ab lifts + butt via side leg lifts It was a mixture of cardio, strength and pilates training and it was tough...but so were we ! Even though not everyone completed these exercises, you did well and I'm sure you will come back stronger.

    I wish I could do this, but just read about it. So not this week for me. If u do another session, next week or somethin, i'll hopefully be able to make it. I've heard about tough mudder a few yrs back, & thought it would be fun, but 2 hard for me. would be more fun with a team to train & enter with.

    Can i just check which car park you mean to meet in. I have walked the shore of the lake quite a bit, but don;t really drive around here much. Is there a car park behind Questacon? And is that where you mean to meet?

    What is the clothes requirement? Jeans and work boots? I'm thinking what to wear because I've never done this before and it sounds muddy. Barbed wire, you probably need jeans so you don't cut yourself but then I'm thinking if it is 20km, does that mean your running 20km or you take turns of running the km?

      I think I'll wear shorts and joggers because it may get hot running plus easier to run in. Note to Nischal, the bubble wrap, cotton wool and swimming goggles sound a bit ridiculous. Anyway I'm just joining to get fit. Whether I do the actual tough mudder competition in October, that's a different story, based on costs and what I know more about it. LOL!!

    Heya, I'll plan to join in and see where I'm at. I was (note the past tense) reasonably fit, but have been struggling with an injury-type thing (ha!), so I'm likely to take it a bit slowly at first. Hopefully I won't slow you all down.
