Re: [graphicdesign-38] Off-week meetings for Job Club participants? To all:
I am one who is voting for meeting more often and I am volunteering to getting it going and organized.
I understand the original intent of this group and I believe that intent is mutually beneficial to everyone, even those currently unemployed. I also understand there are those who have jobs or who are independent contractors or freelancers that have a different focus for being part of this group. In the past I have been part of such groups just to be connected to the local creative community.
But now times are different and my primary focus is finding a job. I was introduced to the ATX meet up through the Launchpad job club. The other job clubs I attend all have something to offer but what I really want is to interact with like-minded graphic professionals who are concentrating their efforts to finding work in this troubled economy. I believe there are others out there looking for the same thing.
I have even offered suggestions for topics at these meetings – for example, 1) How are we marketing ourselves in this very competitive market? 2) Exchange ideas on what companies do and who are their clients 3) Resume, Portfolio, Website reviews 4) Exchanging tips for survival jobs and more. These meetings need not be unstructured or without an agenda.
I am open to meeting in the middle of the day as my evenings are getting pretty full. I prefer a place that has wireless so the group can connect to the Internet. I am open to the meeting place – libraries, restaurants and I even suggested meeting in my home. I will travel almost anywhere in the Austin area to meet.
I would like to hear from you. And please vote on polls on the Meet up site.
The Austin Design and Visual Arts Network (ADVAnet) is a group for designers and visual artists of all types, including professionals, job seekers, students, and those curious about getting into the field. We usually meet once a month, with two additional meetings where we join up with other groups. We were formerly known as Austin Texas Design and Media (ATXDM) from July 2009 to July 2012, and before that it was founded in 2003, called simply Austin Designer Meetup. We're Meetup.com's second oldest continuously active graphic design group. (We're watching you St. Louis!)
