Unknown Armies RPG - "The Neon Dream" Campaign

"Unknown Armies" is a post-modern occult game about power and consequences. The world has an occult underground consisting of people who are absolutely NOT normal. They are obsessive, disfunctional people who have pursued their passions to the point that they can make magick happen...they change themselves and the world changes too.

You play these people, in the surreal, gritty, seedy occult underground of Las Vegas.

This is a short campaign about that underground, your rivals, your extreme, bizarre behavior and its consequences. It's for an audience who are comfortable playing obsessive characters in a strange setting. It's a very easy system to play and you don't need to have played it before. You can attend a session here and there or come to them all, no worries. The only rule is that we'll only ever have one player from each "school" of magick.

You can be one of the following Adept types:

The Bibliomancer - Your spells are about acquiring knowledge. Your power comes from owning books. To gain more power, you need to get more books. Your taboo is that you must never destroy a book, or lend/sell/rent one from your library. The paradox of your magick is that it's about the books themselves, not what's inside.

The Cliomancer -  Your spells are about manipulating common knowledge and memories. Your power comes from famous visiting places. To gain more power, you need to be the only claimant and visit places regularly.Your taboo is that you can't keep your magickal charges for long, you must use them. The paradox of your magick is that history is a lie. You present the lies as facts, and facts as lies.

The Dipsomancer -  Your spells are about demons, poltergeists, astral projection and generally cheating. Your power comes from drinking alcohol. To gain more power, you need to drink alochol, the rarer, the more powerful.Your taboo is that you can't sober up.The paradox of your magick is that it's a power trip and death wish rolled into one.

The Entropomancer -  Your spells are about playing with time, fate, luck and chaos. Your power comes taking risks. To gain more power, you need to take more risks. Your taboo is that you must never get someone else to take a risk that you wouldn't take yourself. The paradox of your magick is that it's about the pursuit of power through surrender.

The Epideromancer -  Your spells are about altering your body (or other peoples). Your power comes from self-mutilation.To gain more power, you need to harm yourself. Your taboo is that you must never allow someone else to alter your body(doctors,dentists,barbers..no-one).The paradox of your magick is that it's about creation by destruction.

The Mechanomancer -  Your spells are about making amazing clockwork machines. Your power comes from spending time working on the machines and sacrificing your memories. To gain more power, you need to give more time and memories. Your taboo is that you must never work with technology developed after the 18th Century. The paradox of your magick is that it's a vision of the future rooted in the past.

The Narco-Alchemist -  Your spells are about changing perceptions of yourself. Your power comes from making and consuming drugs. To gain more power, you need to get make and take more powerful drugs. Your taboo is that you lose the effects when the drug wears off,and you can only take magickal drugs for the stronger spells. The paradox of your magick is that it's about becoming a superior spirit and an inferior human.

The Personamancer -
Your spells are about acting, appearing to be someone else. Your power comes from pretending to be other people. To gain more power, you need to fool more people for longer periods of time. Your taboo is that you must never show your true self (act on one of your "Passions") in front of someone else. The paradox of your magick is that it derives power from identity while proving identity to be an illusion.

The Plutomancer -
Your spells are about peoples relationships with money and aquisitions. Your power comes acquiring money. To gain more power, you need to get more money. Your taboo is that you lose power when you spend more than $1000 on a single item .The paradox of your magick is that you acquire wealth while living like a pauper.

The Urbanomancer -  Your spells are about manipulating your city. Your power comes from knowing your city.To gain more power, you need to get to know the city deeply. Your taboo is that your magick only works in your city. The paradox of your magick is that the city is made of its people, yet no single person makes a difference.

The Videomancer -  Your spells are about understanding people and events..and changing reality to fit with the conventions of TV shows. Your power comes from following a particular TV show.To gain more power, you need to keep watching your show. Your taboo is that you must never miss an episode of your TV show when it's broadcast where you are.The paradox of your magick is that TV connects you to the world while isolating you from it.

Or one of these Avatars (I'll explain these further on the day):

The Gambler

The Merchant

The Rebel

The Trickster.

The Bibliomancer

This game is played at "Global" level. In other words, your character will already be deep into their chosen path. They know all the spells and what they need to do to "charge" the spells. This differs significantly by school.

The amount of magickal power you start the game with depends on the character you choose, except for Avatars, which work differently...their magick is about conforming to an archetype.

We'll cover all this in depth in the first session.

No worries if you're late or can't make it, today is very much about character generation, establishing your cabal and setting up some story threads.

    Cliomancer is yours!
I'll be posting some notes and guidelines this week for others to read for ideas.
I'm fine with players choosing avatars rather than adepts, though prefer most of the group to be adepts (some of the GMCs are definitely avatars too).
I'm also fine with someone being an adept and during the campaign making their way on the avatar path too....anything goes.

Main thing is this is "Global" level, not "Cosmic", so whatever you play, you'll be in the early stages.

If I was a player,I'd be an avatar only because I "get" those concepts more and find them easier to play. I'll put some notes up on that too.

Unless someone objects I'm calling dibs on cliomancer, I've got an awesome idea for an historic location, although it is a drive and technically under the rules would only be a minor site. Paul would you let people be avatars instead of adepts?

Did this replace the Geist game on the same day/time?

    September 15, 2013

    • Paul M.

      Yep, same slot.

      September 15, 2013

    • Herb

That's cool...to be honest I'm more interested in UA anyway...I've always loved the game.

      September 15, 2013

  • Charles M.

I could do arvo or evenings.

    September 8, 2013

  • Richard B.

Rats. This conflicts with Sandy's Dresden Files game.

    September 8, 2013

    • Paul M.

Just checked the timing....it conflicts for the first two sessions, but then after that it falls on the saturday before Dresden..so you can jump in then if you want :-)

    • Richard B.

      Yay!

      September 8, 2013

  • Paul M.

All,if you're interested in this game I'd also consider running it on this day but in the evening. Whatever works best.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
