Monster of the Week RPG

"Monster of the Week" is an action-horror RPG using the Apocalypse World system. It's very easy to play. This is a mini-campaign meeting once a month, for six months. Think of this as Buffy meets Supernatural meets Hellboy.

In the first session the players will come up with a concept for the group, then it's on to cracking mysteries and killing the monster.

I have created a mystery and monster for the initial session only, one that touches a few points so it will fit into whatever direction, paths and mythologies our story will take going forward.

At the end of this session, you'll be able to make changes to your character,as you'll have a feel for how they actually play. This is a chance to tweak before we head deeper.

You don't have to choose now,we'll decide on the day, along with a group concept. The characters and group will set the tone and story threads for the campaign. We'll also arrange things so that the concept works if people can't make all the sessions or if new players join.

Character concepts for you to choose from are:
The Chosen: the chosen one, with a special destiny. E.g. Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The Expert: knows all about monsters and magic. E.g. Bobby Singer from Supernatural; Rupert Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The Flake: a conspiracy theorist, great at putting clues together. E.g. Mulder or the Lone Gunmen from The X-Files.
The Initiate: member of an ancient monster-slaying Sect, trained to fight and use magic. The Wardens from The Dresden Files; Annelise from the Twenty Palaces series.
The Monstrous: a monster fighting for the good guys. E.g. Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel; Bill Compton from True Blood.
The Mundane: just a normal regular person, especially good at dealing with regular people you meet. E.g. Xander or Cordelia from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The Professional: you work for an agency that hunts monsters. E.g. Riley and the Initiative from Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Olivia Denholm from Fringe.
The Spooky: has psychic or magical powers. E.g. Sam Winchester from Supernatural; Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The Wronged: revenge-driven, and really tough. E.g. Dean and John Winchester from Supernatural.
The Luchador:The masked wrestler.
The Divine: Angelic, holy being sent to fight and protect.
The Snoop:The reporter.
The Summoned: Dark being sent to begin,or prevent, the apocalypse.
The Big Game Hunter:The hunter who heard about strange creatures.

The Action Scientist:Laser guns,robots,science!

The Exile:A hero thrown into our time from the distant past.

Very similar to that! It would be white, made of porcelain and the bottom of the mask would be tapered at the bottom to form a more angular bottom. It would also be slightly curved to more fit the face.

How come these games have limited numbers of slots? Don't you create your own characters and then begin the adventure from there? My wife and I would like to attend and play so please let me know if we can. Pulling up an extra chair or two and sharing the adventure was always the best part of RPG gaming when I was younger so I hope we can do that again.

Got it. I am interested in this type of game especially playing one of the Cthulhu games like Elder Sign. Do you have any meet ups for those?

    • Paul M.

I've been running Cthulhu stuff for over two years, so taking a break for a few months. I'll be bringing it back with the epic campaign "Masks of Nyarlathotep". That will take a long time and is open for a big group. It'll start in the summer or earlier depending on schedule. I'll keep you in the loop for when I have it planned for sure!

I have a friend who would also like to play if there is still one more spot open - or does he need to create an account and sign up for the spot officially?

    • Paul M.

Hi Matt, just RSVP for yourself again and you should have an option to bring a guest. It'll then show as "Matt +1".

      Done, thanks!

Also,no knowledge of the system is assumed or required..this is easy to learn as we go.
    I'm adding two more playbooks.

Also, no worries if you change on the day when you've seen more details in the playbooks. You can also change things around at the end of this session before we get too deep.

That's an awesome playbook. I also have a soft spot for the Spooky...the other dark character.

    I'm fine with the Expert.

    December 27, 2013

    • Paul M.

An excellent choice, and you'll like some of the stuff they get :-)

      December 27, 2013

  • James H.

What was that one that was a member of a secret order? Because Knight Templar.

    December 27, 2013

    • Paul M.

The Initiate. In this game, characters choose options from pick lists. You'll also get options specifically for the sect that you belong to...very easy to make it like the Templars.

So far we have a Mexican wrestler, Russian hunter and a conspiracy theorist.
This is going to be weird, in all the right ways.

    December 23, 2013

    • Paul M.

That's a great playbook...I always think of "the Lone Gunmen" on the X-Files.

      December 23, 2013

  • Paul M.

What I'll be bringing to each session is:
    A mystery and monster.
    Develop an overall story arc.
Develop story arcs for your characters...you'll come away from this with your own piece of the story.

    December 23, 2013

  • Hepcat M.

    BAM! I'm in!

    December 22, 2013

  • Paul M.

I've added some details...character types to think about. You don't have to choose yet.
