Old School Mini-Megadungeon OpenTable Campaign

Join us for the third session of an old-school expedition to assault and explore a mini mega-dungeon in an ongoing open-table campaign!

What happened in the previous sessions? Check it out here: Official" Campaign Blog

Beginners and those curious about old-school games welcome!

You do not need a copy of the books to play!

Attention Players: If you don't already have a character in this campaign, or you want to roll up a new PC, show up around 7:00 PM (30 mins prior to game) and we'll roll up your character(s), unless you want to do it at home.  If you can't make it early, no worries, I'll have pre-gens ready to go!

What's an open table? Whoever shows up that week plays. Drop in and drop out at your heart's desire.

Rules: We'll be playing 1981's Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rulebook ed. Tom Moldvay  and  Dungeons & Dragons Expert Rulebook eds. David Cook and Steve Marsh. For those not wishing to buy the PDF or track down a copy, Labyrinth Lord is free and is the same more or less.

Documents to Check Out:

•  Some Things of Note (if you've played more recent editions of D&D, this will explain some differences)

• House rules These are my personal house rules and do apply during our sessions. We had our first use of the d30 rule last session!

    So when's session 4?

    April 21, 2014

    • john

There will definitely be a Friday session in mid/late May, but there will probably be a short Wednesday session in early May. I just have to confirm which one.

    • john

Well, scratch that. Friday May 9th is the next session!

Hey all, thanks for coming out! I had a lot of fun! While talking to Tony after, I realized I forgot to implement the bonus XP system I had wanted to use. SO, for the survivors there is additional XP (i knew i had thought insanely long about this). This is "additional xp" at the DM's discretion, but there's a system (there's a slight variation but here's the system I came up with and it has gotten a lot of use : http://tabletopdiversions.blogspot.com/2013/02/awarding-non-treasure-xp-in-solo.html) : Survivors each get 150 xp for exploration and 100 xp for surviving encounters. If you took any damage, you get 20xp per point suffered. As for damage dealt - i don't know who dealt what, but as party you dealt 128 points of damage, and that averages 214 XP per PC (I'm dividing by 6, since both dead elves did of damage too,). SOOOOO, 494xp + damage received xp.

I'm bringing three unpainted/poorly painted minis:

an angry fighting man, two Warhammer high elves, and a Gandalf-looking wizard.

Hey, do they sell dice at Challenges? My collection is in Mississippi. :(

I have extra in my bag. If they don't, you're still covered

Cool. I just called ahead and they have some.

I mentioned a bit about experience points differences for classes, and went to graph them...then I found out someone had done it better than I would have: http://www.dizzydragon.net/deconstructing_bx_dnd/start

The second chart (http://www.dizzydragon.net/_media/deconstructing_bx_dnd/levelbyxp.png) is the really instructive one on picks.

The differences between dwarves and fighters are explained really well on this page :D

http://i.imgur.com/YY... are the rules from getting Xp from monsters

I think he's just adding the treasure table on X43 (and the XP you'd get from it) to the monster's value. It is assuming the 4HD monster is worth[masked] monster killin xp and 5000kish looting xp. So I think his point probably holds? Depends really on the numbers he was using

And a reminder: Bring any food/snacks/drinks you might want - the food court closes at 9 (except for Wendy's, I think).

Looking forward to playing tonight! i'll be there by 7 for those who want/need to roll up characters. I'd like to get the game started as close to 7:30 as possible so you all have more time for adventure. If you can't make it by 7:30, no worries though; your character will miraculously catch up to the party.

    Hey folks,
At the last session I brought up an idea that I am now proposing for the next session. The concept is that every one of us takes an elf PC for this session. So far, there are five of us who RSVPed. That would be five magic spells available for use in one session. But, elves fight like fighters, too, so we could still handle melee and ranged combat. It's true we would not have healing spells but we have not hardly used those so far anyway. If we make plans as a group at the start of the session we should do really well. If we try to handle things without having to fight then all the PCs will survive.

I haven't, and I'm not sure what the acronym B/X means, but I can dig it.

B/X stands for Basic/ Expert. The edition we are playing.

Going out of town this weekend. When do you think the next one will take place?

Wednesday night sessions sound like a great idea, but, I won't be able to participate in them until early May. #GradSchoolWoes

No worries, Tony. That's about when they'd be starting!

    Hey, I'm new.

    April 14, 2014

I've never played this edition before. I'm reading through all of the material you posted above. I'll be as informed as possible by Friday.

Great! Ask any questions as you think of them. As you've already seen, we're a pretty talkative and responsive group.

While already playing Honest the Bear, an elf with a comb-over who has the darkness variant of light memorized, I'm not super worried about min maxing the dungeon yet. But hey, elves often are the most powerful characters at low levels (but man, those low levels take FOREVER in B/X for elves).

    • john

Yeah, 4000xp takes some time to accumulate and by then, the fighters, clerics, thieves and halflings are all 3rd level. Of course, of them, only the cleric can cast spells, and not until 2nd level.
