Son of Dark (2E D&D Campaign)

This is an ongoing 2E D&D campaign. New players are welcome.

Last time…
The Adventuring Dead company has successfully braved the dangers of an ancient step-pyramid tomb loaded with traps and creatures to steal back an ancient relic of Apollo from the tomb, which held the remains of an ancient champion of Hades.
Upon returning to Salhantar the group discovers more time had passed than they experienced, indicating the tomb they plundered was not on the same plane of existance. During their absence the Son of Dark’s forces and plans had progressed. The Guildhall of the Adventuring Dead was burned down in the night, and the guildmembers still there slain by undead creatures controlled by the Son of Dark. The Lady Helena of Isis, high priestess of the Isis temple was found murdered in her own temple. It was revealed as well that many assassinations of important people by powerful undead had occurred all over the city before the officials were able to drive the Son’s agents from the City proper.
The group was escorted to see the Lord Alexi, and the city council, here they were introduced to another one of Lord Alexi’s former adventuring companions, Tir-Nan the Red, a powerful Fire Mage. Tir-Nan confirmed that the item the group retrieved was a powerful relic, but that it was not powerful enough to change the fate of the city against a large undead force on it’s own.
The group was sent off to recover from their quest, while Tir-Nan and his apprentices searched for the means of Lady Helena’s death deep in her own temple’s catacombs. A few days later, the group was called again to the Lord Alexi, Tir-Nan found a secret tunnel had been dug up from deep below the city. The group was sent down to scout, with the assumption that the tunnel would lead to the secret chambers the Son of Dark was staging his undead army.
The group discovered far below the city, the ruins of a sunken city, one likely from the times prior to the cataclysm. Within this buried city streets, the group discovered a vast army of undead, far larger than anyone expected. Having scouted the group returned to the surface and reported their findings. After a meeting with the city council and a private meeting between Lord Alexi and Tir-Nan, the group were sent back down into that buried city with mystic explosives. To mine the chamber, and destroy the army in the cave-in.
For once thngs went mostly as planned, other than an unexpected and short lived encounter with the Mistress Aldaem, the chief minion of the Son of Dark, the group made it back to the surface, and signalled for the detonation. The size of that underground chamber and lost city was quite massive, and caused a large chunk of Salhantar to drop at least thirty feet, destroying nearly a quarter of the city. However, being aware of this the city organized a cover story which was used to evacuate those whom lived in that area. When the collapse was finally done, the massive sinkhole had breached the city walls, and crossed out into the river, creating a small lake in the city.
For a short time after the collapse, the Lord Alexi and city thought the threat over. However, one of the Adventuring Dead picked up a scrying mirror in that terrible tomb, which revealed not only that the Mistress and Son survived, but that they had an additional army being prepared. With this news the city ramped up it’s preparations for war, and sent out scouts of all natures into the wilderness, to gain early warning of the advancing army.
The Son however had different plans, just days after the destruction of the majority of his army, the Son of Dark managed to create massive rift like portals from whereever his army lay in wait, to a short mile away from the city. In just under an hour more than two thousand undead had emerged from the portals, and started to form up ranks. It is clear there will be problems in the city, for the entire defending force of the city is a mere fifteen hundred, many of those archers, whom are of very limited effectiveness against an army of skeletons.
The Adventuring Dead whom remain alive in the city are being used as an elite strike team, and will be sent after special targets. While the group await orders, they help out where they can, and that first night, found out the Son of Dark considers their company one of those special targets, for he sent a squad of wraiths to attempt to slay the group. The wraiths it turned out were no match for the group, and quickly dispatched.
We begin this week with the war for Sahlantar starting up in earnest. Will the Adventuring Dead be enough to turn the tide of a near hopeless situation? They have already turned the situation from impossible to merely hopeless, who knows how much further they can tip the balance?

For those keeping track (Ie all of you) the xp earned in that last session comes out to nice total of 6200 XP per character. Very nice. Those Jotun Skeletons were worth a very very nice amount, as is defeating the Mistress.

As the battered companions stare at the (momentarily) stunned priestess, Corwin approaches her, looks up at her, tickles her her nose, and says "To slaughter a foe helpless such as she...Such is for cowards. Wot's more, she's worth more to us alive than dead. Some of you (he looks about at the group) hold a grudge, that much is obvious. That said, we're not here to satisfy our petty egos. If we're to save this city we've so graciously agreed to protect we'll be needing to squeeze (he pats the priestess's bottom) every bit o information we can. We can gag her, blind her, string her up...so as the only thing she'll be able to cast is her shadow...And deliver her to the local powers that be and let them put the real squeeze upon her. Frankly, if they canna' manage that this city ain't worth saving regardless. So that's me two coppers worth. I'm new here.

Hey guys, thanks to a good suggestion from Todd, I created a message board for the game. Just created it, so will have to fill it out along the way.

David once again did a GREAT job DMing even though we had a bigger group than normal he was well prepared and was able to handle it. Smooth running game.

For those interested, I just visited the new location for Gigabites. It is a much bigger space, and has much better parking. Should work better for us. That said, I will try to show up around 11 am, so any of the new players that want help with characters can get it.

So can Daron use his secret weapon the giant hound Paprika? Lol

Hi David. though it's been some 18 yrs since I last played, I spent a good decade playing 2E. That said, I know that a TON of supplemental (The Complete Book of...) material has been added. Do I need to be familiar with the new races/classes or can I get by with just a 2E Player's Manual (at least for short-term)? Also, I'd only be able to play every other weekend (kids with me alternating). Is that acceptable?

You can get most of the 2E books here...http://www.freegamema...

Thanks gents, that's perfect. As my job involves running a digital press I can at least print out the P.H. and use that short-term until I can purchase a copy of the real thing.
David, I'll let you know in the next day or two if I can make it.

For everyone new, here are some helpful points.
This world is based heavily on the mythology of Greek, Egyptian and Norse traditions. There are no TSR deities. The dwarf race generally follows the Norse tradition, but not exclusively.

Not just a war, an undead war lead by the chosen vessel of the god of death. You know, simple :)

Going to knock this out before lunch even if it is 1150 when we start and eeveryone wants to eat at 1155:-)

A note for those first joining this game...this session will out of the ordinary, as you are lucky enough to be joining right as the war starts. It will be stupidly large fights, and perhaps even the settling up of a few scores for those 3 whom have been playing from the start, a certain priestess of Hades might finally stand and fight rather than just burn down your homes, have you tortured, and be behind the deaths of many of the guild mates.

Your world description has given me a lot to think on. Especially the fae courts. Being under maab's thumb, possibly unwillingly is intriguing (at least using the Dresden files portrait of the queen of air and darkness)

      July 8, 2014

    • David L.

The Dresden files is a heavy influence on my take on this world's fae court. As a point of note, the Wild Mage, Puck in the party is a follower of Maab, and presently owes her a favor...

Adrian "The Strong Arm of Ares" says boldly to the group, "The Son of Dark has dared to bring his War upon the great city of Shalhantar. I do not fear War; because it eliminates those that are weak and can only make the strong, stronger. There is no greater glory than to die upon the battlefield in the service to Ares the god of War. It is only a matter of time when the Son of Dark shall pay for the destruction of our guild and slaying of our fellow guild members. He truly is a fool that has consistently underestimated the power of The Adventuring Dead by sending his weaker minions to do his biding. He is a coward that refuses to reveal himself for fear of being sent back to the underworld from wence he came."

Daron wants to coat an arrow with snake venom and put it in the misstress's face

Good plan that. She might not get away again then.

    • Roy L.

I'm sure David won't mind do you know how to roll your character?

      July 6, 2014

    • David L.

Yes new people are welcome. Your newness to the game should be no issue, there are several others whom are fairly new to paper rpgs and several whom are long time players. So lots of helpful experience with some players and others whom are new so you don't feel overwhelmed

      July 7, 2014

  • Aaron

Hello, just going to presume you are still taking on players from the intro. Never played 2e but looking forward to trying it out. Assuming no issues, do I need to come prepared to play or would you prefer character generation in person?

4d6 rerolling ones and picking best three. Final numbers can be applied to any stat

      July 3, 2014

    • David L.

You won't have any luck attempting to make the demiclasses using the point system as it stands. TSR essentially treat the "kit" classes as their own unique thing.

Hey David - Have you had a chance to see what the new location looks like? I was wondering if the new store location is as big as their old location? Also, if there are any D&D figurines you might need for this game session please email me to let me know.

    June 30, 2014

    • David L.

No I have not checked out the new location yet. I am hoping to check it out sometime this week.

Also, figures, rather than have you bring what amounts to an army of figures I created some tent cards for the hordes of undead. Though your giant skeletons will still be handy.

I wanted to remind everyone to check the date on this. I won't be able to run the game this coming weekend.
