"The past month has shown us something that America can no longer ignore: millions of Americans want to watch our channel and better understand our region, and too many are deprived of that opportunity." - Wadah Khanfar, director general of the Al Jazeera Network

As an Al Jazeera English online viewer, you already know the value of AJE when you are seeking information on the realities of the Middle East. However, misinformed views about our content and journalism continue to keep Al Jazeera English off of American cable and satellite providers.
On Thursday, 10 February 2011, US viewers are encouraged to make their voices heard by their local cable and satellite providers to demand Al Jazeera English. Meetup with people in your community who are demanding the same - and organize the best way to get that message to your cable and satellite providers.
To find the contact info for your cable or satellite provider, visit http://english.aljazeera.net/DemandAlJazeera

These Meetups are organized by YOU - Al Jazeera English viewers who can see through the misperceptions that are keeping AJE off of American television. If there is not yet a location set for your Meetup, go ahead and suggest one. If your Meetup needs to happen at at different time of day, go ahead and change it. Use the comments within your Meetup to discuss these details as well as what you will do at your Meetup.

An update on the plans for this Meetup:
The head of Al-Jazeera's Social Media will be calling in to the Meetup to answer our questions, so be thinking of some good things to ask!
We will have a camera there to record short (i.e. 30 second - 1 minute) testimonials or reasons why we want AJE that they can use as they're meeting with cable companies in the coming weeks and months.
We can also try to get a petition together for everyone to sign or could provide paper for people to write a petition of their own.

Posted by Nate Graves February 18, 2011 at 11:55 AMAnd here's the video (I still haven't had a chance to try to clean up the audio) http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Posted by Nate Graves February 18, 2011 at 11:55 AMI haven't been watching AL Jazeera on the internet since the Egyptian government fell until today. I just watched Riz Khan interview two finance experts about the upcoming G20 meeting. It was an excellent program, much more interesting than Charlie Rose, I would say. How can we get people to watch Al Jazeera on the web? I suggest it to friends who always counter that they watch CNN or whatever.
Posted by Joanne Collier February 16, 2011 at 3:35 PMI called the regional vice president of programming at Time Warner NYC and recommended they offer Al Jazeera English (got voice mail, but left a message). [masked] or [masked]
Posted by Chris Enock February 15, 2011 at 12:40 PMI will send a check for $10 to Joanne for the buttons. Out of our 30 Al Jazeera hotshots we only need six more to get those buttons.
Posted by Martin Horwitz February 15, 2011 at 9:30 AMC'mon you guys we're losing traction, momentum, and whatever effectiveness we were hoping to have.
Has anyone called Time Warner sales to get an upgrade?
Way to go Joanne. Find out about those buttons and I will try to front part of the initial cost.
Posted by Martin Horwitz February 14, 2011 at 9:40 PMI have also requested Time Warner to upgrade me to get Al Jazeera. Their sales rep will look into it and get back.
Everyone should do the same.
Martin, Check out 'Affordable Buttons' on the web, a business in Rochester, Minn.. We could get 50 buttons for $67, using their graphics design team. I picture a small (3/4" or 1") button, maybe black with red lettering.

Posted by Peg February 14, 2011 at 10:07 PM36 turned out. Good hummus. Great BUT
What was accomplished? Please do a post so that those of us who did not make it can continue to participate.

Today the Times did an analysis of the uprising 'A Tunisian-Egyptian Link That Shook Arab History.' Not surprisingly they saw many behind the scenes bigwigs pulling the strings. I sent a letter to the Times today to point out the role of Al Jazeera round- the-clock coverage in protecting the demonstrators by ensuring that massive force against them would be seen by the whole world.
Posted by Joanne Collier February 14, 2011 at 2:28 PMRe: asking for a service upgrade and then Al Jazeera. Excellent, positive, instead of "why don't you..." buttons? that means money upfront.

Thanks for your comment. The last time I looked it wasn't all that expensive to get small campaign buttons made, but I will look again. We can design them ourselves. We did this during the 60's and I checked it out again when we were getting into Iraq.
Posted by Joanne Collier February 12, 2011 at 1:25 AMI'm sorry that I couldn't make the meeting after all. I would have suggested that we order campaign buttons saying simply 'Al Jazeera' and let our friends ask about why we wear it. We should tell people about the live coverage of the middle east on the internet by clicking 'Al Jazeera English'. I also called Time Warner and asked for a 'service upgrade.' I then told the operator that I wanted to add Al Jazeera. She wasn't at all surprised or confused so I must not have been the only one.
Posted by Joanne Collier February 11, 2011 at 7:56 PMIt was a pleasure to meet everyone. Hopefully this is the start of some real change. Please take a look at my news site www.facebook.com/wearethecyphe
r. We will be joining the community as The Cypher (as opposed to just me) and promoting this and are interested in hosting an event.

Good luck tonight!
Thats great, will be making prints
Posted by Deja Murray February 10, 2011 at 5:04 PMReally would be better to have women included in pictures AJE uses for flyers/posters. The male-dominated stereotype does not help here.

Posted by Peg February 10, 2011 at 3:30 PMSomehow I missed either the draft of the petition or the name of the person drafting it. Or at least the name of the head of Time Warner and the address to send the letter/petition? At least?
Posted by Martin Horwitz February 9, 2011 at 10:05 PMWe're trying to get a standard petition template from Al Jazeera. Feel free to draft one up yourself if you'd like! :)
Posted by Daniel McGrath February 10, 2011 at 9:35 AMPlease take a moment to watch this video message from Al Jazeera's Egypt correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin.

Posted by Al Jazeera February 10, 2011 at 9:16 AMDoes anyone have anything they really want to see done at this event? Petitions/Letters/etc?
Posted by Daniel McGrath February 5, 2011 at 8:53 AMWe schedual a time to flood each cable company with calls to include Al Jazeera in there news lineup.
Posted by Hussein February 9, 2011 at 11:33 AMAlso "snail spamming" is a fun option to consider down the road if it seems like other methods aren't getting through. It worked pretty well for Fiona Apple fans.
Posted by William Rodeffer February 9, 2011 at 8:43 PMLet's aim at getting to 30 by tomorrow! Each one bring one.
Posted by Martin Horwitz February 9, 2011 at 11:46 AMI posted the description of the film Control Room just so everyone was aware of it, very good discussion of our own lack of full access to the news from the Middle East.

Posted by Martin Horwitz February 9, 2011 at 4:12 AMSame letters/petitions prepared for TimeWarner can work for Comcast too. Note NYT report on Monday: "Al Jazeera English has contacted Comcast, for instance, and a meeting has been scheduled for later this month."

Posted by Sarah Aral February 8, 2011 at 7:58 PMAl Jazeera needs to buy a cable station like Dish TV
Posted by Sarah Aral February 8, 2011 at 7:57 PMWe are humbled by the efforts you all are taking to help bring AJE to US airwaves. This Thursday, we know you will be meeting to brainstorm how to urge cable/satellite providers to carry our channel. We trust that you will find a way to make your voices heard - whether through phone calls, petitions, or video testimonials. We hear your voices, and we're doing everything we can to be as accessible as possible to you. We’ll be sending you updates about our carriage efforts as they come. Good luck!
Posted by Al Jazeera February 8, 2011 at 1:10 PMI'm willing to press the issue of being able to have access via tv. I understand Al Jazeera English has taken strides to change public opinion about your efforts to report facts that are otherwise covered up. I certainly would welcome that as an American-Lebanese w/family also from Palestine. Not sure I will be able to make this meeting and hope for possible meetings on Long Island.
Posted by Jennifer February 8, 2011 at 2:35 PMUsually first "meetups" are like college mixers, for at least half an hour.
Posted by Martin Horwitz February 8, 2011 at 11:50 AMCould someone draft a letter/petition to Time Warner that we could all sign and then maybe put on line somehow?
Good suggestion! How about one that is generic that can be used for any one of the tv providers, ie Optimum, Verizon, FIOS,Time/Warner, etc?
Posted by Jennifer February 8, 2011 at 11:58 AMWhy not Cablevision as well as TimeWarner? One adds pressure on the other, plus widens our audience.
Posted by Peg February 7, 2011 at 11:57 PMSo anyone can go?
Posted by Mike C February 6, 2011 at 2:25 PMYep, anyone at all!
Posted by Daniel McGrath February 6, 2011 at 3:08 PMCheck out Frank Rich's column in todays Times. It dovetails nicely.
Posted by Alex Nagler February 6, 2011 at 11:45 AMAnything. Maybe an Email letter to CNN and also to Time Warner complaining about lack of good on the spot reporting from a good professional Arab point of view.
