Local planning meetup for upcoming "Demand Al Jazeera Call-In Day" View details →

448 communities and 38 Al Jazeera viewers

No matter how large or how small your city is, the only path to successfully getting Al Jazeera on US television is by putting pressure on LOCAL cable systems.

So, on Weds, March 23, Al Jazeera English supporters across the nation will place thousands of phone calls to their local cable & satellite providers DEMANDING Al Jazeera English as a part of their television offering.

To prepare for this day, we need AJE's most dedicated supporters (if you're reading this, that means YOU!) to meetup in your town on March 15 to figure out how to generate as many calls as possible to your LOCAL cable system. Please join a Meetup, set a location, and start finding other AJE supporters in your town to join you!

This is a supporter-organized effort! In the coming days, we will be providing you with materials including printable flyers and posters, customizable local press releases, sample letters to the editor, and more. If you would like to contribute ideas, skills, etc please join our AJE Supporters Google Group at http://groups.google.com/group/demand-al-jazeera.

At your Meetup on March 15, look over the list of suggested activities below and assign tasks. It is up to YOU to find every Al Jazeera supporter in your community and get them to call on March 23!

Tasks to assign at the Meetup:
    * Print and pass out National Call-In Day flyers at shopping malls, bus stations, busy intersections.. anywhere in your town that has a lot of people around!
    * Print and hang up flyers and posters on supermarket bulletin boards, in community centers.. again, anywhere you can!
    * Customize the National Call-In Day press release and send to all local newspapers and TV news programs in your town.
    * Develop a strategy to try to track how many calls are placed in your community (and plan to report back to the Google Group with results)
    * More to come!

Then, obviously, March 23 is the big day. On that day, it's all about phone calls to your local cable and satellite companies.

Stay tuned for more details! Join a Meetup today!

Let's meetup to DEMAND AL JAZEERA on US television! View details →

438 communities and 567 Al Jazeera viewers

"The past month has shown us something that America can no longer ignore: millions of Americans want to watch our channel and better understand our region, and too many are deprived of that opportunity." - Wadah Khanfar, director general of the Al Jazeera Network

(For the entire article by Mr. Khanfar, visit http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/opinion/2011/02/2011...)

As an Al Jazeera English online viewer, you already know the value of AJE when you are seeking information on the realities of the Middle East. However, misinformed views about our content and journalism continue to keep Al Jazeera English off of American cable and satellite providers.

On Thursday, 10 February 2011, US viewers are encouraged to make their voices heard by their local cable and satellite providers to demand Al Jazeera English. Meetup with people in your community who are demanding the same - and organize the best way to get that message to your cable and satellite providers.

To find the contact info for your cable or satellite provider, visit http://english.aljazeera.net/DemandAlJazeera.

These Meetups are organized by YOU - Al Jazeera English viewers who can see through the misperceptions that are keeping AJE off of American television. If there is not yet a location set for your Meetup, go ahead and suggest one. If your Meetup needs to happen at at different time of day, go ahead and change it. Use the comments within your Meetup to discuss these details as well as what you will do at your Meetup.

Let's discuss the effectiveness of the Egyptian govt's crackdown on the media View details →

158 communities and 54 Al Jazeera viewers

What effects do YOU think that the Egyptian authorities' suppression of the media, including Al Jazeera, could have on the protests? What do you think are the reasons behind the media blackout? In the day and age of social media and mobile phones, do you think that a media blackout can effectively achieve its goals? Discuss this topic at your Meetup.

    From http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/01/2011...:

    AL JAZEERA CAMERA EQUIPMENT SEIZED
Camera equipment remains seized after release of six Al Jazeera journalist who were briefly detained in Cairo.

Six Al Jazeera English journalists, who were briefly detained in Egypt, have been released, however; their camera equipment remains confiscated by the military.

The move comes a day after Al Jazeera was told to shut down its operations in the country and saw its signal to some parts of the Middle East cut.

Following the arrest of the journalists a spokesman of the channel said Al Jazeera will not be deterred; "If anything, our resolve to get the story has increased."

On Sunday, Al Jazeera expressed its "utter disappointment" with the blockage of its signal on Nilesat.

International press institutes have come out strongly against Egyptian authorities' suppression of the media, following the withdrawal of Al Jazeera's license in Egypt.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the information ministry's move to shutdown Al Jazeera?s bureau in the country.

The CPJ described the move as an attempt to "disrupt media coverage by Al Jazeera and calls on them to reverse the decision immediately".

Nilesat, the satellite transmission company owned by Egyptian radio and television stopped the transmission of Al Jazeera's primary channel and others.

Reporters without borders added to the condemnation of Egyptian authorities attempt to quell the media.

"By banning Al Jazeera, the government is trying to limit the circulation of TV footage of the six-day-old wave of protests," Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Jean-François Julliard said.

Protest organisers are calling for a "march of one million" people in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, on Tuesday in an attempt to overthrow Mubarak's rule.

They are also calling for a rolling general strike until the leader, who has been in power for more than 30 years, steps down.

Several hundred demonstrators remained camped out in Tahrir Square in central Cairo overnight, defying a curfew that has been extended by the army.
