Grasshopper #1 Old Caz - Ride or Volunteer?

Notoriously brutal mixed terrain race/rides. Most are best suited to either a cross bike, a road bike with the biggest tires you can fit on them or a mtb with skinny tires. Go to the Grasshopper Adventure Series site for more info:

Crazy how popular the Hoppers have become. Thinking of doing the Chileno Valley Grasshopper on March 1?

So yeah the ride was awesome! I started off slow. Didn't get to warm up but did OK getting up to Willow Creek but then I had someone crash right in front of me on the dirt and had to stop to take a piss and ended up toward the back of the pack. Luckily there was a gathering of Roaring Mouse guys near the Indian restaurant and I was able to latch onto them on 116. Basically rode it pretty casually until we got onto Austin Creek and then the company I was in--Garrett, a couple of Box Dog guys, a Superpro guy, a DFL guy and a Big Swingin' guy all decided that it was hammer time and we had a good group getting back to Willow Creek. Took it easy and tried to recover on the paved and potholed portion of WC and then picked up the pace a little once I hit the dirt. All in all a good ride and a great day! Definitely feeling it today. Need to get in some more road miles in the coming days--particularly if I decide to do the next one.

Had an awesome day! The turn of events was a little strange, as I got picked apart on the last climb by hordes of CX bikes - couldn't figure out why guys (and girls) so much stronger than me didn't pass me earlier in the race! Did it in 3:39, which was 6 minutes faster than my goal of 3:45, and 15 minutes faster than last years time. At the same time, I was unable to hang with several people I was finishing with (or ahead of) last year in both Grasshoppers and MTB races, making me wonder if I was off.

From the lung busting climbs, the bomber dirt descents, the high speed pace lines (21 mph avg speed on my MTB!!!), to the scenic remoteness of the roads and trails, Old Caz is one of the most unique events on my calendar - and is a must-do every year for me :)

Btw, my French is very limited and I'm not aware of any other Americans in our group who know it, so if you can post in English you will get more responses. We do have a few people from France however in the group. Have fun today and welcome to the group!

Looks like Shiltz is using Strava on a Samsung Galaxy 3 and it's having a hard time locating his position. He is wondering if someone knows what's going on and has the solution. He says thanks in advance.

Anybody interested in having a post-race meal at the Union Hotel? I'm looking forward to a big bowl of pasta almost as much as I'm looking forward to the ride/race/whatever you want to call it.

We are looking for volunteers for this event, just a couple people as Flaggers at a couple intersections. If interested email me at [masked] it should only be in the morning for an hour or so.

I changed the title of the meetup so that hopefully it will attract some volunteers. I talked to one guy (Dirk) this weekend who said that he would be hanging around on his motorcycle and helping out.

Pre ride Friday 24th. Meet @9 in Occimental ride at 9:30?

    January 17, 2014

    • Grant T.

Wish I could join you guys but it will be a work day for me. :/ Probably not going to be able to ride it again before the "race." So does this mean that you'll be doing the hopper, Roger?

      January 17, 2014

    • Roger S.

Nope still pretty unlikely that I will ride the event. Might go out and do a bottle drop for you guys if you want.

As long as I get in enough training from now until the series, then I'll be there. Would like to try a few of the rides in the series.

Of the whole series, I think I look forward to Old Caz the most! The Lake Sonoma Grasshopper is fun too, but it feels a lot like a shorter version of So No Mas (with a mass start). With all the small towns and country roads, Old Caz is has a more adventuresome feel to it :)

For those who haven't seen it yet, here's some front-runner helmet cam footage at Old Caz in 2009. It gives you an idea of what to expect.

In the footage, they're starting by rolling down Bohemian Highway (which is chaos) - this year, it will start with a 700 foot climb up Coleman Valley Road out of Occidental :)

Austin Creek was ridable on Dec 15th. Still got wet feet though. Old Caz is in great shape.

Maybe pre-ride course? Leave from Oxy-mental? From my place it was ~70mi using River rd a lot; wouldn't rec it as a group ride cuz we can't ride two by two and talk. Lotsa options though.

Cool, yeah we'll talk about in greater detail on Sunday!
