Oat Hill Longer Ride (Aetna Springs or Wild Lilac trail)

I'm posting this ride with the caveat that I have only ridden Oat Hill up to Holm's Place (the top of the rocky section). However, I would like to explore further in that area. Thus, the exact route may depend on who can show up and the Oat Hill expertise he or she brings with him or herself. That said, the most likely option is probably to head to Aetna Springs and back. I'm going to estimate that we may ride approximately 15 miles with at least 2500' of elevation gain. Oat Hill is technical and challenging, so this is probably a solidly intermediate level ride. Also, Oat Hill is rock and drains well, so it isn't muddy like Annadel will be... Feel free to comment or email me if you have questions.

I know the area well. Am willing to guide a midweek ride. Like this next Tue. or Wed.
It's super technical. Even more so than Oat Hill.

Last minute RSVP much? I'll be at Bad Ass at 9, leaving 915 or so, and have room for one more bike + gear if anyone is interested in carpooling.

Just keep going after the Holmes place. It's about 4 miles or so to the east trailhead, near the blue house. The rest of the way to Aenta springs is on dirt road, tons of elevation drop. The ride from Holmes place to the East Trailhead is worth the ride. It's easy to follow.

Hey thanks man! Blue house. 4 miles. Don't bother with the dirt road. Got it!

Crud, now I see this ride posted after a few brews on Friday night.

Huh? A few brews should be inspiring, not de-motivating. I'm concerned this is not the right MTB group for you...

Jeff, yes Wild Lilac begins further up 29. I have never ridden it, so I may do a little research, but would be hesistant to go without someone who has done it before.

Me either. Definitely need someone who's done it I would think. I know where it starts, and where it ties into OHM, could be spurs that take you off into the unknown thou. Have some friends who do it just haven't been able to meet up.

My last in/out from Calistoga to Aetna springs with no variants was 17mi and 3100'. The side routes are pretty steep and narrow. Can't ride sat... Maybe sun

    December 7, 2012

    • Nathan C.

well i have never done the side routes on the oat hill/calistoga half, so most likely we would be going out and back on the main trail

Wish I could go but I am busy. I have always wanted to do it all the way (sounds kinky). I got a couple mile beyond Holm's Place once. There was a lot of poison oak. Let us know what you find. Good luck!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
