I am always looking for ways to increase users' feelings of empathy toward other beings and of interconnectedness with their environments; for this, AR is the best (and most underutilized) convention I know. I strongly advocate contextual inquiry in a relevant atmosphere to draw out users' deepest desires and inhibitions. In grad school, I designed and prototyped AnimalConnection, a model exhibit designed to satisfy zoo visitors' unmet desire for empathic zoo experiences. The exhibit simulates a day in the life of a Mexican Free-tailed Bat, outfitting blindfolded participants with "echolocation devices" and sending them on "bat missions." Employing inexpensive sensors and haptic output, AnimalConnection is one of a suite of similar exhibits that could be implemented at zoos and museums around the world to give visitors simulated animal experiences.
All of the above!
