Lecture Series-Human Light Celebration

Does this dreary, icy weather have you shut in and feeling blue? Come out next Sunday and participate in a new Secular Humanist tradition: the Human Light Celebration. The Arkansas Society of Freethinkers will be gathering to share a mid-day meal and to look forward to the upcoming new year by focusing on three of the most prominent values of Secular Humanism: Reason, Compassion, and Hope.

This family-friendly event will feature a demonstration of the scientific method, Rudy the Mindreader, a carol sing-a-long led by the Pastafarian Gospel Choir, and will end with a reflective candle lighting ceremony, so bring the kids, parents, friends, neighbors, and anyone else who’d like to gather with their fellow humans to observe the Human Light.

We are hosting a pot-luck lunch, so please bring your favorite dish, drink, or dessert. To assist us with organization, please leave a comment below telling us what you plan to bring.

To celebrate Compassion, we will be collecting money, gift cards and personal hygiene items (e.g. toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, lotions, etc.) to benefit Our House, a local organization that helps the working homeless get back on their feet by providing them with shelter, job training, education, childcare and summer youth programs. See for more suggested donation items.

The program will start with the meal at 1:30 pm, and will last until 4:15 pm. Feel free to come and go at your convenience—please just come out and say “Hi” to your friends, old and new. Hope to see you there!

Sorry, but I had a change of plans and didn't make it today, but hope to see everyone at Anne's house next Saturday for the solstice party. I'll still have wine!

As stated earlier, I will bring key lime pie as well as spicy lentil soup made with chicken sausage ( sausage bits large enough to be removed by vegetarians, if desired.)

Our House told me they are in particular need for paper products--toilet paper, paper towels, etc. Feel free to donate those items for the charity drive as well. Thanks!
