Socrates Café

Terry Library (map)

Selected By: Dave Bentley

At Socrates Café, people explore questions from their lives through dialogue and discussion. Participation in these meetings is open to the public, indeed to anyone who enjoys engaging in lively conversations about interesting topics. The first Socrates Café was organized a decade ago; today more than 600 Socrates Cafés exist worldwide. In Little Rock, the Central Arkansas Library System sponsors Socrates Café, which works like this:

At the beginning of each meeting, participants offer possible discussion questions to a facilitator, and a vote determines one question to explore in depth. The selected question invariably launches a lively discussion and debate. Past questions have included the following: How can societies be compared in moral terms? In what ways might the limits of language determine the limits of thought? How are plants like robots? What are war memorials for? How should we fix health care? Why have Socrates Café?

We believe that Freethinkers will enjoy an evening of stimulating conversation at Socrates Cafe. This library event takes place from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the McMath Library, the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Terry Library, and the 4th Wednesday of the month at the Fletcher Library.
