Winter Solstice Caravan

Donations for this will be accepted at every event until December 21st. We need volunteers to help distribute the gifts.

Okay, so, the real name of this event is the "Christmas Caravan," but in the interest of ecumenical outreach, we're changing its name for our group!

Every year the Christmas Caravan provides basic necessities to homeless adults, and toys and other items for homeless and near-homeless children.

Volunteers load their vehicles with donations and gifts, then line up to travel parade style behind Santa Claus to the Clinton Library donation site. We'll decorate out vehicles and ourselves to create a fun atmosphere. At the Clinton Library, we'll park and distribute gifts. Santa will have a busy morning spreading the holiday spirit, and we will all play the part of his helpful elves!

Breakfast will be served to the homeless and goodies will be distributed to the children.

If you don't want to drive your own vehicle, you can ride the River Rail to the event.

Individuals, families, youth groups, churches, school groups, social organizations (that's us!), and agencies participate in the caravan. We'll have our banner to let everyone know we're there!

Whether you gather donations or drive in the Caravan, you are equally vital to making this event happen.

Tax-exempt donations must be gathered no later than December 15th. (A tax donation letter will be mailed to you.)

Santa’s List for the 2012 Christmas Caravan

* Clothing - (All Sizes Men's, Women’s, & Children’s) When thinking of items that the homeless need, consider what you would wear casually to stay warm if you were going to be outdoors in the cold for an extended time. Please, no dress clothing or dress shoes. Outerwear items can be gently used, but should be in good repair and clean. Underwear should be new. Examples of clothing needed: Coats, Gloves, Scarfs, Socks, Jeans, Shirts, T-shirts, Socks, Thermals, & New Underwear in addition to work or walking shoes or boots – not sandals or high heels.

* Blankets or Sleeping Bags

* Backpacks, Sturdy Conference/Book Bags, Duffle Bags, or Gym Bags

* Tents and other Camping Gear such as Lanterns, Camp Stoves, Ice Chests

* Non-perishable Food such as Small Canned Meats, Crackers, Energy Bars, etc.

* Candy for Santa Claus to Distribute

* Personal Care Items such as small items of shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes & razors

* New & Good Used Toys for Children of all Ages – Please make sure that any toy you are donating for a child is clean, in good working condition, and has batteries if needed. Think about gifts for children of all age groups, teenagers are often left out, (gift cards to McDonalds, etc. make good teenage gifts).

Consider wrapping your gifts for the children so they will have the fun of ripping open gifts – BUT be sure that you attach a tag that states appropriateness for boy or girl and the age range.

    This was a very good event and I would like to do this annually! Next year we need to have a booth for handing out food. It was so good to meet Susan and thanks for organizing this event. I only gave it four stars, because when we have our own booth it will be worth five!

    I see that you state donations can be brought to every event until the 21st, but since I will be at the caravan on the 22nd...I would like to ask if donations can be made the day of the event? I just want to be clear about it. I will have my donations gift wrapped and ready for distribution, if that makes a difference.
