I wanted to say welcome to our new members, but especially to everyone who hasn't been out in a while. There is a lot going on this month, and hopefully 2011 will be a big one for the advancement of reason!
Luckily we've all learned that a billowy bearded man who watches you while you're sleeping for a worldwide "Naughty or Nice" list, so as to best allocate his stash of bribes, is not to be trusted. And that Santa character sounds suspicious, too.
You've already gotten a few emails about the high visibility events, but I would also encourage you to join us at the New Member Potluck, a great opportunity mingle and meet some new faces. Of course, if you love pizza and beer like we do, Vino's (next week!) is always the most popular event!
The real reason for this email however is, we want to know what you want to do as our group gets bigger. With our new Meetup site, ANYONE who has an idea for an event can host it! We could have something different for everyone each day of the week. Do you want to host a:
Murder mystery party?
Skeptics at the pub?
A book club?
Dogwalking volunteers for those poor agnostic puppies?
Whatever it is, all you have to do is pick a day and we'll run with it!
I unfortunately missed the official meeting and hope that Dave, Susan, and company were able to convey some energy from the big Skepticon 3 convention. The speakers were great, and that such a small group like the students in Springfield could put such a huge event together was inspiring. Especially their risque "Atheist of the Month" fundraising calendars.
(Volunteers for our 2012 calendar... Anyone? ...Dave?).
Lastly, does anybody here like to go camping? I was able to network with lots of great people from the groups in Springfield, Branson, Conway, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City, all of whom were excited about coming together in the Ozarks this summer. A recommendation was to float the Buffalo River (ideas for the event name?). I would like to head up this coordination effort, and anyone who wants to donate some spare time to help organize would be greatly appreciated. We are also working on forming a student group at UALR and could use some time putting together fliers for the spring semester. If you would like to help with any of these projects, or start one of your own, just say the word!
Hope to be seeing you all soon!
