Protest Walk for Autism Speaks

Tempe Beach Park (map)

Selected By: Tara

Registration for the annual Walk for Autism Speaks starts at 8:00am. I would like to have protesters out BEFORE registration begins so we can tell them why they should give their money to another Autism organization, ANY other Autism organization. Autism Speaks continues to portray all Autistic people as being without a voice, potentially aggressive, and pursues research goals that are not in our best interests, including genetics research with the eradication of Autism as their end goal, universally wiping out those of us with more mild cases as well as the more severely affected. Bring your protest signs, your water, possibly as sweater, and your temper. THERE WILL BE NO SWEARING ON OUR END. If you have difficulty holding your temper, I suggest leaving early or putting tape across your mouth with a sign saying that Autism Speaks won't let Autistics Speak! Tempe Beach Park (technically, the three corners across from it, which is the Northwest corner of Mill and Rio Salado). There are a number of parking garages by the park.

I was all set to try and attend that walk in response to it being mentioned in my companies newsletter. I work with Autistic kids, and was one of the higher functioning ones, that went undiagnosed because of the ignorance of people who thought it was a debilitating disease. I didn't realize the walk was sponsored as a fundraiser by people who seem to be in that category. So I would be glad to show up as a protestor instead, if that is your reasoning.

If nothing else maybe we can get the idea into people's heads that autism is not a disease that needs to be cured. For that matter much of the violent tendencies are caused by the drugs they give a lot of these kids. I was on some of them myself, although in my case the abuse from my father contributed as well, and that could be the case for some of these kids whose parents don't understand them and get easily frustrated with them, and want to blame the autism.
