Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) is essentially present to advocate for autistic individuals. We're very excited this year to get going on much more advocacy for our state. We'd like to spend meetings creating a neurodiversity-friendly autism awareness poster, collaborating on a proposal to target kids on the spectrum through Big Brothers Big Sisters, creating input for self-advocacy tools to be distributed across the nation, etc. Our meetings will be a place where we can work together to make positive changes in lives of people on the spectrum. In order to be effective we need to designate a high number of meetings to advocacy verses social, hence the number of advocacy meetings has been set to 9. Keep in mind that extras will be thrown in like social gatherings for picnics, etc., that will be outside of our regular meetings--like the upcoming potluck with Roger's group. (A social outlet is still provided through the structured framework of working together on advocacy tasks.) |
