Hello and welcome to the ASAN: part social group and support network, part grassroots uprising!
My name is Andy Voss, and I am a proud Autistic working with seasoned disability advocate Zach Miller to start a new chapter of the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN). Take a look at the links above or below to help you make the most of this Meetup site!
Our activities
On the first Monday of each month, we meet at the Supported Life Institute to discuss our personal experiences, joys, and problems. We also enlighten each other on the politics, philosophy, and history of autism, psychology, and what it means to be an Autistic citizen. Our chapter is still new, but we will discuss political action and outreach activities in the near future.
Our mission statement
The ASAN is a national organization dedicated to the community participation and political empowerment of Autistics all along the spectrum, whether Asperger's, "classic," or PDD-NOS; speaking or non-speaking; self-diagnosed or professionally diagnosed. We promote the idea of neurodiversity, meaning that different kinds of brains, including Autistic and non-Autistic brains, constitute legitimate parts of human diversity and not diseases to be pathologized or weaknesses to be stigmatized. Unlike other organizations relating to autism, we encourage and insist on Autistic leadership within our ranks instead of deferring to non-Autistic parents or psychologists.
Disclaimer
ASAN is not a therapy provider.
