I'm your group organizer so hello and welcome to the group!
Welcome to Asheville to all of our Transplanted Friends!
Welcome to Western North Carolina’s Meetup group for all y’all who have come from all over the world to make these mountains your home. Whether you just got off the plane or have been here for decades, this group is for you. We are a group for all ages.
For the last five years, even as we have been known as the Asheville Ex-New Yorkers Meetup Group, we opened up this great group to include folks from cities all over the world. As long as you are friendly, inclusive, participative and enjoy good conversation, you’ll fit in.
The group has an organizer but Meetup groups are at their best when members step forward to setup and host events, greet and help people and generally serve one another.
We tell stories and commiserate with others who have too often heard, “You’re not from ‘round here, are you?” We help each other assimilate and feel less like a stranger. We share our businesses with one another and help each other succeed and grow.
If you like great conversation where any subject can be discussed and all political views, religious preferences and cultural backgrounds are embraced, you will like coming out to our little melting pot here in the mountains.
We have a cosmopolitan, city, inclusive mindset. Our members are from all walks of life with a depth of experience, knowledge, talents and world view, bringing richness to our conversation. With equality and diversity, we maintain a sense of humor and an ability to laugh at ourselves. At the heart of our group is a heart for each other and the community we develop.
With many members in the 25-45 year-old range, we are planning to have events tailored also to a younger crowd. If you are in that range, be active and engaged. We’ll give you the tools to set up events and integrate many social media platforms. Just contact the organizer. Whatever your age, we're all about connecting our wonderful members.
This is YOUR Meetup group...without the tolls and we don’t check passports. Help us setup dinners, movies, beer gatherings, writing events, art strolls, hikes, bikes, speakers and travel…basically whatever you want but you have to make it happen. Are you game?
Helpful Hints & Policies We have only a few group policies. Experience shows that it really makes for a better group experience.
Profile…When setting up your profile, your organizer appreciates a recognizable face photo and a real name, both mandatory. Full names are preferable. Nicknames, rainbow names and aliases are unacceptable. Thanks for your consideration!
E-mail…Our email amount is fairly minimal and generally only comes from the organizer. Members who set their email preferences at digest will not receive timely notices and this makes organizing difficult. Members who set the preference at None never come out so I just delete them. Please set your email preference to receive messages as they are sent.
Soliciting…Your businesses and livelihood are important. Many members enjoy doing business with our group members. Our AwT Meetup events are social so please try not to overtly solicit business. These are not business card exchanges. Feel free to get to know each other which, of course, means discussing your business if you like. Come for the camaraderie and friendship.
Dues…Meetup.com charges your organizer $150 per year. There is a lot of time spent and other expenses necessary to make a Meetup group successful and fun for everyone. There are no dues required. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.
Access…For the security of you and other members and the proper running of the group, there are NO WALK-INS to our events. To attend one of our events, you must be a registered member or accompanied by a member. The No-Walk-In policy is intended for non-members. Signing up is easy.
No-Shows and RSVPs…Ask any organizer. No-shows are hard on organizers and the group in general. Most events allow you to change your RSVP to NO almost up to the last moment. Please help out and update your RSVP when you know you can’t make it. Also, you only have to RSVP YES to an event if you are going. It is assumed that you are not going if you don’t RSVP at all. Otherwise, the organizer has to delete dozens of NO, I’m Not Attending emails.
E-Cigarettes, Illegal Drugs & Unlawful Behavior…What you do in your private life is your business. At AwT events, e-cigarettes and similar devices, illegal drugs and unlawful behavior are strictly prohibited.
