Melbourne AWS User Group Monthly Meetup

Our regular monthly meetup (on the last Wednesday of every month).

Arrive at 6:00pm for a 6:15pm start.

Please note that due to high numbers, we have capped the number of RSVP's to 70. Please be courteous, if you are planning on not attending, please modify your RSVP accordingly so others can attend in your place.

This month we will be giving away 8 x $100 AWS Credit vouchers to the first 8 people that blog about the group and post a link to their blog on our website!

This month BMC are sponsoring the meetup and David Carless from BMC will be presenting on "Amazon AWS with BMC options"

Next up we will have Jaques Malan presenting on "Cloud application architecture".

And finally we will have Peter Hall, presenting "AWS cloudformation and cumulus".

"Cumulusis a tool we wrote to help you manage your stacks in CloudFormation and build bigger logical stacks from multiple cloudformation stacks"

Steve Gorton will be hosting the User Group this month as I'll be off in Hong Kong competing with Podzy in the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA).

Wish me luck!

There is a heap of new news and features for AWS that were launched at the AWS Invent Conference this month, so Steve should have a lot to talk about in his "AWS News" segment.

This will be the last meetup of the year, with the next meetup scheduled for January, 2014.

Also configured my Route53 to point to the ELB (Which is NOT inside any subnet) All worked fine. Then I denied all inbound port 80 to that EC2 except for the one coming from the ELB security group so I do not want anyone to directly access my instance. I observed that I cannot get the page rendered properly after waiting for a while due to some reason. Cannot figure out whats going wrong. Any inputs will be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hey Rahul, sounds like it should work in theory.

Yesterday I cleared AWS certified solution architect exam with 77%. Tricky questions - thought I did well to have hands-on along with white papers reading. By the way, I am stuck again :) with a simple scenario where I launched my custom VPC (Not going through the wizard), installed VPCs and EC2 instances RDS SQL Server in private sub while apache (to run wordpress) in public. Now, I put an ELB in front of apache EC2 instance and first enabled worldwide access to ELB port 80 (added that EC2 into the ELB) and also all inbound port 80 access to EC2. To be cont...

Wondering whether anyone can comment on this

How do you manage a scenario like this:

    1. You are taking EBS incremental backups; say first day total data is 1 TB and then a few gigs.
    2. You try to recover using say 3rd day snapshot by creating a volume from it that means you will have data from day 1 which in turn would be more than 1 TB. However, you cannot create a EBS volume for more than 1 TB.

Hey Rahul, the EBS volume snapshot is block based, and will only ever restore the latest copy of a block. So it is irrelevant how many backups of what size, you will only ever restore up to the size of the EBS volume, never any more.

Thanks Rob. Yeah, makes a lot of sense. Looks like I missed out very basics itself :).

Hope we didn't overwhelm anyone too much with our Cumulus and Cloudformation talk. Please check out Cumulus on Github and don't hesitate to contact me for some guidance, the initial learning curve is well worth it! :)

Being extremely new to AWS, I thought that all the information would be in one ear and out the other, but I must admit I did actually understand what you're doing with Cumulus and cloudformation, and can see where you're going with it!
Great presentation to both of you!
