Has anyone in the group tried to create a Spot Instance with a max bid value equal to the reserved instance price? What are the chances that such an instance could get killed by AWS?

  AWS Spot instances can be yanked at any time. The pricing depends on if AWS need the extra capacity or not. Quite simply, if you want cheap, always-on instances your best bet is to use a reserved instance.

  Unlikley but possible - just look at the Spot price history chart - occasionally you'll see (fleetingly) SpotPrice>PAYGprice

  Thanks Joshua. Understand that. However, am building an intelligent scaling program that could exploit the cost benefits and hence was exploring the way Spot's behave on AWS.

  The problem you've got there is that there's no default way that spots "behave" on AWS. The spot pricing is directly driven by the demand placed on the back-end. If the demand for on-demand is high, or excessively high, then spot prices will rise as a result. This can happen without warning so whatever you design will need to have the ability to cater for this.

Just some info for the new attendee's, we usually finish the presentation part around 8pm at the latest (beer & Pizza is in the middle at around 7pm), although everyone is welcome to hang around until 9pm, which is usually when I need to kick you all out, otherwise you get to help me clean up!

  Sorry about the slow return to business and delay in agenda. Talks will be around new AWS services and updates announced (Rob) and the other will be entitled "Not Cloud" (Steve).

  Hey Shalien, that's a bit harsh. Steve is committing his time to do a presentation far in excess of the time it takes you to listen to it, and you get free beer and pizza to boot which other people have invested their $$ to provide. At the end of the day you have the freedom to choose where you invest your time, so how about you invest it in a presentation that the rest of the user group can enjoy instead of bagging out those who are keen to make the effort.

  This is an investment in the attendees time as well as some of us drive for 2 hours to make this presentation & it is not unreasonable to expect a decent idea of a presentation before committing to the long drive there. I am sorry you do not see it this way and I will be skipping this meeting after your reply.

  Shailen, you may have to re-look at the scope and intent of these meetups and re-set your expectations. If I am not wrong, the intent is for folks with similar interests and needs meet and exchange views/ideas. There could be a formal agenda like the one above or there may be no agenda at all. If you like it attend and if you cannot make it for any reason there would none on the other side to care or question.

Following the avalanche of new AWS features can be a full-time task, however I am very interested about the new AWS OpsWorks announcement, yes.
It sounds sensational for working in the DevOps arena - making use of chef etc.
