Sundance Canyon

  • May 5, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Sundance is a 3BIIR Canyon in West Clear Creek, with some semi-keeper and keeper potholes ending with a 180 ft rappel, much of which is free hanging.  This is a more advanced Canyon and not for beginners.  This canyon has some deep water and may be very cold.  That being said, it is a 5 Star Canyon not to be missed and the last rap is unforgettable.  The trip will take 2 to 5 hours.  The exit requires a 750 ft climb out.
We may do Bear Canyon immediately after we do Sundance on Sunday May 5.  So doing bear would be an option for anybody who does this trip.

Required Personal Gear List:

Rappelling Gloves

Descending Device

Wet Suit (Expect Cold Conditions, so 5 Mil to 3Mil full wet suits.)

PSD, i.e., a Personal Safety Device

Several Locking Carabeaners (optional, if you have it bring it.)

Ascending Gear Preferred (At least two people in the group will need ascending gear aside from myself)

Note: Required means you must have the gear unless it is identified as optional or preferred.

Required Personal Skills

You must be self reliant and have the ability to reasonably assess your own skills.   You are responsible for your own safety. I am facilitating this trip.  I am not a guide nor am I accepting responsibility for your safety.

Ability to add friction while on Rappel or setting up Rappel.

Ability to escape Pot Holes/ascending ability for at least one other person in the group aside from myself.

Required Group Gear
Two 200 Foot Ropes (9 Mil to 9.5 Mil) One 60 Ft. Rope (9 Mil to 9.5 Mil) 3 Rap Rings25-30 feet of webbing.Pot Hole Escape Gear (2 sets of hooks, two Aiders and preferably a pot shot)

Vehicle Considerations
High Clearance 2 Wheel Drive is sufficient.  We will need vehicles for 8-10 people.  We will be leaving from the group camp site, so the drive should not be long.  We will not need shuttle vehicles.

Even better than I expected. A very challenging work out. Water was not too cold, and the long rapp was not half as scary as I expected. Thanks Ted for your help at the last rope in spot.

Hi Aniko, Do you think this is one is suitable for me?

Hi Robert, - yes, you'll be fine, but may need to get something warmer than your 3/2 wetsuit, the water is crazy cold (extra layer)! We can do a fireman on the big rap, but prepare to be in freezing cold water for a short time (depending on everyone's speed):) Glad you can make it, and thanks, Ted, for getting Robert on the list!

I look forward to meeting Robert. And also, Robert, I trust Aniko's opinion 100%.
