Christopher Creek

Christopher Creek is a short 3C II Canyon 20mi. east of Payson. Very scenic right now with 4 or 5 short rappell's into cold water. Two are down waterfalls and one has a tricky overhang to negotiate. The highest is about 50 ft. It should only take 4 or 5 hours to complete but we will take our time to enjoy the water in this scenic canyon. The climb out is only 400ft. but over rugged country exposed to the western sun. Plan accordingly. Total distance 2.5 miles.

Required Personal Gear:

Harness
Helmet
Descending Device
3mm Wetsuit
2 or 3 Locking Carabiners

Required Personal Skills:

You must be self reliant and understand your own limitations. Must have completed at least one other canyon in running water conditions. I am not a guide. You are responsible for your own safety.

We will set up carpools and leave Lowe's no later than 8:00 AM.

And thank you for being patient with my "rookie" wife. The day really upped her confidence level & she finally got to see what a great bunch of guys are a part of AZ Tech. Thanks again. If any of you want to do some canyons on your list that I've done (or new ones I haven't), let me know. I'm game! John

Always a great canyon. I really enjoyed seeing some new faces out there that bring a lot of experience to the table. Thanks everyone for a fun filled day.

Chris, meet us at Denny's at 8 AM. We are not going to stop at my sisters so you would drive both ways with us if you'd like.

    Shoot that would be fun

Back in town! Changed the time to 7:45AM. That should be plenty of time to meet John & Chris at 8:15.

BTW if you have a daisy chain or cows tail, bring it, one of the waterfalls has an exposed start.

My mistake, I misread your intersection...yes, we'll be on Bush Highway right near the north on ramp to 87 at 8:15. We'll be in a 4 door grey/silver Altima.

Chris, meet us at Denny's at 8 AM. We are not going to stop at my sisters so you would dive both ways with us if you'd like.

    Bringing my brother

Sorry I wasn't clear. I'm talking about the intersection of Bush Highway and 87. There is plenty of room there for off the road parking. I'm not very familiar with Fountain Hills.

  • John H.

Eron, to be specific, you mean the NW area of the T intersection, near the flag pole, by the billboard & the power lines, just east of Taco Bell, correct? John (and maybe Chris)

  • John H.

Chris - We'd be glad to hook up & give you a ride to the Creek and if we decide to stay for dinner at my sisters near Chris Creek you may be able to get a ride from one of the others on the way back. We're meeting the others at the intersection of 87 & Shea at 8:15. See the general emails on the trip. If you want to drive with us meet us at Denny's near Shea & Saguaro BLVD in Fountain Hills at about 8:10. Let us know. [masked]

    John and Christopher,

We will be coming up the Bush Highway to 87. How 'bout we meet you at the north side of the intersection around 8:15. There is plenty of parking there. My cell is:[masked]-3489. I'm currently out of the country and cannot receive calls but I will be back Thursday afternoon.

We live in Fountain Hills, on the way up to Payson we can meet you rather than at the Lowes? Maybe Denny's in Fountain Hills at 8-8:30 AM or so? Let me know what's best.

I'll put up a map after I get back from lunch. We can all agree to meet at the parking location so folks can all find their way. I'll post the route as well. Eron. What time do you want to meet at the trailhead? There is a nice spot to park next to the construction yard.

    May 14, 2013

  • Eron

I will have webbing and (2) 100ft. ropes but if anyone wants to bring rope and webbing feel free. We will divide gear up at the trailhead.

Thanks for the invite, but I 've been away for the past two weekends in canyons and am spending time with my wife this weekend. This is always a fun canyon and will plan on doing it later in the year.

    May 14, 2013

  • Mike B.

Yes Laura. Eron and I have run many canyons together and have all the gear. Just bring the required gear for yourself.

    One of my favorites!
