This CERT program trains the community in basic disaster prevention and response skills such as disaster preparedness, fire suppression, disaster medical operations, search and rescue, organization and disaster psychology.

This six-week course culminates in a disaster simulation. Classes are hands-on, intensive and designed to offer students decision making and practical skills needed to safely assist families, neighbors and coworkers in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Dates are October 2, October 9, October 16, October 23, October 30, November 5, and November 9

Time is 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. (November 9th will be 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)

CERT training is free but pre-registration is mandatory as class size is limited.

How long before grocery stores are emptied in emergency conditions... 3 days or 3 hours? How long when the "loot" sign is turned on? http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2013/10/food_stamp_recipients_empty_walmart_shelves_during_system_glitch_1.html#ixzz2hj3NpQO9

what he said was that we would get some medical stuff next week an the list is not medical?

I didn't hear any call to bring stuff. I did hear John say we'd be getting more stuff for our bags. My guess is they'll give us the supplies necessary for each section on the day the class covers that section. You know how people are, "My dog ate my exam gloves."

It was a great first class and the three hours flew bye. First, we went thru class intros (24 shows, 13 no-shows) and covered what is expected of CERT members. There was a lot of info on personal disaster prep like how to build “go” kits, making personal/family plans, and the importance of practicing the plans. Next we covered the valleys’ most likely disaster events and the importance of knowing your particular areas’ most likely events. We also got a start on covering first action steps if an event arises. Then there was a full hour on terrorism; types of attacks, types of targets, eight precursor/tell-tales of terrorist activity, and the usual goals of terrorists.

JoAnn: West Phoenix is still Phoenix, there are no sides. I am a member of Phoenix CERT. You can go to their website, www.phoenix.gov/fire and click on Fire Department Directory. Then click on CERT. The 3rd quarter class schedule is currently available. Shortly after the first week of October, they will publish the 4th quarter class schedule. The dates and times of the Basic Training Class will be included in that schedule. Also, instructions how to proceed will be included.

Just registered for the Oct. classes. Looks like Scottsdale and Tempe are sharing. If you go to the Tempe.gov CERT page you get redirected to Scottsdale for sign-up.
