No wakeboarding on Labor Day! Christopher Creek - Box Canyon Instead!

I hope I'm not breaking the rules, but I am not going wakeboarding this weekend! This is one of only two weekends of the year that I plan on not going to the lake. After going on 92.6% of all Saturdays over the last seven years I have learned that Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend are bad at the lake no matter what the weather is. It seems like everyone brings out the boat one last time before putting it away for the winter on Labor Day. By Everyone I mean every yahoo that doesn't know the rules of the lake.

Anyhow, I am going to hike Christopher Creek aka Box Canyon on Saturday. If anyone is interested let me know this week. My truck is almost full already but you can follow us. I have done this hike about 5 times and know it pretty well.

These are the best websites that I can find on Box Canyon:

With all the road construction up there it might be an adventure just finding it, but I will call tomorrow and see if we can park at the Boy Scout Camp, they let me last year. I have met such awesome people here wakeboarding that I thought maybe you all would interested in this hike! Let me know early if you are interested!

I'm still working on a place to park. The road construction really throws a wrench into the works. I have plenty of room in my tahoe so anyone can ride up with me if they want. I think it might be an adventure just trying to find a place to park.

On my second trip we followed a bunch of mountain goat locals who got all the way to the very last waterfall and then climbed back out. I was able to do this but almost died on one of the climbs. As a result I will not climb back out the way that I came. I will take the easy route, jump off the last couple of waterfalls and climb the safe, but long hill, very slowly, back out the highway.

When I do the cliff jumps I usually wait for another group to go first and then follow them off. I will bring a section of rope in case no one is there to go first. If this is the case, one of us can climb down and scout out the landing. I have done this trip about five times.

At this point I have plenty of room in my car. I have a Tahoe that seats seven and currently it's only me and one other guy. Seven is packed full, but I don't care, the more, the merrier.

Everyone, please be aware that this is not your normal hike and read the descriptions in the links above. Every time I have done this hike it has involved about a one mile hike down to the stream. Once you get to the stream you then start hiking down stream. The beginning is very easy except the rocks can be very, very slick. You then come to some waterfalls that are fairly easy to climb down. If you think these are bad you should stop and go back the way you came. I think there are a total of five, maybe six, jumps that are very hard to avoid. After you do the first couple you can not turn back, or it is very difficult to turn back. At the bottom are a couple high jumps of around 35 feet.

Here is a map of the hike. I was planning on just leaving from my house though, finding parking up there is going to take some doing, so we should car pool if we can!

Yes, to the bottom and then hike out to the road. I have never used a rope on this hike. Parking is going to be an issue, I got a loud no! from the boy scout camp.

Are you planning to go all the way past the larger falls?

    August 29, 2012

  • Ryan

Probably at 7 or 8 AM. It takes about two hours to get there and probably another 3-4 hours on the trail if you go slow and have fun. Probably eat in Payson on the way home.
