3-DAY HIDETANNING CLASS

  • Dec 28, 2012 · 9:30 AM
  • LOCATION DETAILS TO FOLLOW
Hidetanning class in the Santa Monica Mtns. Fri. Dec. 28, Sat. Dec. 29 & Sun. Dec. 30, 9:30 AM to 5:PM each day.

You, your family and friends are invited to join me, naturalist and Aboriginal Skills instructor Jim Robertson for a three day hide tanning class at a beautiful private location in the Santa Monica Mountains.  This is not just a mechanical, unconscious activity.  As we honor and respect the spirit of the animal throughout the entire process, we will be transforming tough, strong deer hides into fluffy soft, strong and beautiful buckskin.  These deer were hunted by people who had no use for the hides.  We are using these hides to teach valuable ancient skills and to make products from them that can last a lifetime and more.   Remember, all of these skills that we practice are pathways to a deeper relationship/connection with our natural environment and ourselves, which ultimately leads us to a sustainable, harmonious way of living with our planet.

Each of the three days will focus on a different phase of the hidetanning process.  The first day will focus on “graining” removing the hair and one layer of skin from the hide.  The second day will focus on “softening” the hide and the third day will focus on “smoking” the hide.  We will likely be working two hides (maybe more) and at the end of the class each participant will take home a piece of finished buckskin.

Each day will be a class in and of itself…in other words the ultimate would be for you to attend all three classes.  However if you are able to attend only one or two days it would be very much worth it because we will do a quick review each day of the prior days class.  Of course the best way to learn is to get as much hands on experience as possible, getting all of the senses involved.  There’s nothing quite like working hides together in the great outdoors!

Feel free to participate fully, partially, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of other nature lovers and observe the happenings.  As I said earlier, this is a beautiful area with wonderful hiking trails.  If time allows, after each class we may take a hike.

Sorry no dogs.

I'm So proud of the twenty three people who were in attendance. We worked hard as a team, had fun, laughed plenty, learned a lot and got the job done! We had four nicely tanned hides to show for our efforts. Hidetanning isn't easy work but it is totally satisfying. Especially when you attune yourself with the spirit of the animal with deep respect, reverence and gratitude...transforming the hides that the hunters had no use for, into beautiful, soft, fluffy, incredibly strong buckskins! We make wonderful items from these buckskins that can last a lifetime and more. All of these ancient skills remind us that we can live in a much more sustainable way, the "full circle" way, continually giving and receiving.

A little blood (from my nicked finger), some community sweat and a few tears were all part of this hidetanning event I like the way the class ended when we presented our host Don with a hide. He was so touched by our gift and our presence that he shed a few tears of joy.

Notice regarding a Pre-Hidetanning Class Saturday, Dec. 22nd, 10AM. Sorry for the short notice, but I thought....why not give people the opportunity to get in on this prep/set-up part of the class. This pre-class will cover the "Fleshing" portion of the hidetanning process which most often is not a hands-on part of a hidetanning class (althought it is well explained and briefly demonstrated). The reason it is not a usual part of the class is because the hides need to soak in water for several days after being fleshed. In addition, the work involved in "Fleshing" the hide is relatively simple and quick in relation to "Graining" and "Softening" of the hides...so I usually do the fleshing myself. This can be a fun "warm-up" for those who would like to have a little more experience plus enjoying more time in the great outdoors in a beautiful environment. We will likely have some time afterwards to explore the stream trail, i.d. plants, etc.

Cost is only $10 donation for this

Great Andrew! The closest campsite is Malibu Creek State Park (3 miles from our class site). The fee is $35. per night...maybe you could share a site with others.
