Plan Change #2 for Explore the Atchafalaya Basin

The main two-day trip has been rescheduled for June 15th and 16th.  I will keep this Saturday trip posted, and if we have two or three serious paddlers/adventurers signed up by Thursday night, the trip will be a go.  We can explore and map out the north of I-10 part of the trip for the big weekend.  I'm thinking meeting at 9:00am at McGee's landing. $5 per boat launch fee. (Call ahead if you need to rent a boat - I think it's $40/day).  We'll paddle and explore.  It's wilderness, so bring plenty of water, lunch, and snacks, and remember your life jacket.  You'll also need sunscreen and bug spray.

Had a great time with everybody. Janet, you were a trooper. Guys, loved your energy and enthusiasm. Cathy, we'll have to go again and pick a few hyacinths to keep away from the horses! I've posted pics, so check the photo section.

Had a great time!!! Beautiful weather, nice breeze & not too many boats from the tournament. It was a great start to exploring such a large body of water with great company! Oh & that treasure of hyacinth that I "caught" to put in my pond.... well, Tori, the horses promptly ATE IT!!!!! UGH!

Looks like we will have enough to make the trip Saturday, and the weather looks ok. So - we'll meet at McGee's landing at 9:00am. It will probably take 30 minutes to get ready to launch. We'll kayak for a 2-4 hours, depending on how its going and what the group wants to do. BRING: lifejacket, boat & paddle (if you are not renting); $5.00 launch fee; water or soft drinks; lunch/snacks that you can eat in your boat; sunscreen, bugspray, a hat, shoes that can get wet, and anything else you think you might need. McGee's has a restaurant and some store items, so bring extra money if you want to eat afterwards.

Post with any questions you may have. Looking forward to meeting/seeing everyone.

i'm considering going, but was wondering how difficult of a trip do you think it will be? i'm a decent kayaker, but was going to bring my 10 year old stepson on a double. he's never kayaked before. should we hold out on this one? please inform.

I think this would be a fine trip for you and your stepson. Unless it is windy, the paddling is pretty easy, and I prefer leisurely paddling myself. Be sure to have life jackets for both of you, even if you are strong swimmers. In kayaks, and especially in the Basin where there are lots of powerboats, I always keep mine on. Easier to float than struggle if I fall in. :)

Sorry, something came up and I won't be able to make it this time. Hope to catch up with the group soon.

Yes, Tori. I'm coming. I've got a single canoe that I'll be using.

I unfortunately won't be able to make this one after all. I've an important Dr's apt (unbelievably only poss. on Sat.), my friends' baby shower AND my dear friend's birthday. What a day for June 1st! I was so looking forward to this. Another 1 soon?

Check out the June 15th paddle. Expecting some serious paddlers from south Mississippi.

Thanks for that update Crystal. All - plan ahead if you will need to rent a kayak.

FYI: Somebody stole some of the poor folks at McGee's kayaks. Right now I believe they have 1 or 2 singles and 4 doubles. They are replacing soon, but I doubt they will have more by this weekend. Also, they are 8/hr. or $35/day (and they like you back by dinner time, though I'm sure if you asked to stay later in advance, they would consider being flexible. Nice people).

I hear there is a fishing tournament in the Basin on Saturday, which means there will be lots of power boats out. We'll have to be careful and stay out of the main channels as much as possible. Should still be pretty and peaceful through the cypress tree groves.

As of now, the trip is on. I'll check with everyone by Thursday and verify we have at least 3 or 4 going. Then I'll post, and include details.

I'd love to come, but was planning on renting a kayak from McGees. If y'all end up switching it back to McGee's, let me know! :]

We're flexible - changed back to McGee's Landing for start and finish. Hope to see you there!
