SFJazz - Mariza

There is a beautiful blend of Portuguese, Arabic, African and Brazilian influences.

After decades of neglect when fado was dismissed as a relic from Portugal’s past, a new generation of young women has reinvigorated the nation’s cherished musical style. And no one has embraced fado with more passion and charisma than Mariza, the music’s greatest star and a full-throated singer who revels in the music’s emotional power. With its blend of Portuguese folk poetry, Arabic cadences and African and Brazilian rhythms, fado was an unintended harvest from Portugal’s far-flung empire. These days, it’s Mariza who’s conquering the world as the first Portuguese musician nominated for a Grammy and three BBC Radio 3 Best European Artist awards. Her multi-platinum 2008 album Terra introduced a truly international sensibility with a scintillating mix of songs from Brazil, Cuba, Cape Verde and, of course, Portugal. But with 2010’s Fado Tradicional she returned to her roots, revisiting classic songs in an intimate setting, backed only by acoustic guitar. In performance Mariza is a captivating presence, with her close-cropped blonde hair, swan-like neck and glorious belle époque gowns. While fado singers traditionally stand motionless as they sing, Mariza stalks the stage looking like an apparition from another era, infusing the timeless melodies of her homeland with a singular style.

This woman is amazing I saw her a few years ago in Lincoln Center...She's a real joy... She starts her performance with telling you about how she grew up listening to this music she always wanted to learn called FADO and how she learned how to sing it...
    Enjoy...

I found out late about this event and looks like it is sold out. Anyone has extra tickets?

    March 12, 2013

    • Kovacs

      It seems not. Sorry Bijan.
We have, however, 2 other concerts coming up.
If you have some interests of your own, you can also share it and we'll join you there :) Art is always more fun in numbers!

For those who are interested, we'll meet for drinks after the show! At Grove, which is next door. So if you don't find us before or during the show, meet us there.

I think if there is a choice, after would be easier. Since everyone will be there already. Agnieszka, if you decide to be there before too, let us know the time, so those who are early can join you

Maryam also has not bought yet. Maybe you can buy together. Lets see who else has no ticket yet

      February 27, 2013

    • Kal

I think a better approach for next time is for everyone to pay the event host using eventbrite.com by a deadline. Then the event host buys all the tickets together next to each other.
