Designing Products to Educate

  • Sep 10, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

How can your products help people learn faster, remember more, and have fun along the way? Our next Meetup is about designing products that transform how people learn.

We have Chris Cummings, CEO of Spanish-language heavyweight It's the largest Spanish reference and learning site on the web, reaching more than 60 million unique visitors last year. They are about to release a new product called Fluencia that incorporates behavioral techniques to improve the way that people learn Spanish.

Chris will talk about the core design principles that underlie Fluencia, like adaptive lessons, spaced repetition, mastery-based learning, game mechanics, and long-term engagement. Chris will also discuss how they have built a tight feedback loop to constantly improve the product.  The event will conclude with an open discussion about key design principles that have the potential to improve how people learn.

6:30 Networking with free food and drink starts
7-8 Presentation and discussion with Chris
8pm+ Community event announcements, job openings, etc.

Congratulations Chris! I'm looking into using Fluencia to learn Spanish, and my wife and I have been considering it for our daughter as well. Is 6-years-old too young to use the site? She's highly computer literate.

This was my favorite Action Design meetup so far. It was refreshing to see solid research applied in such a rigorous and creative manner to solve a problem!

    Hey Folks,

I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday. For the sake of the group, please keep messages here focused on the Meetup. There's more than enough time to promote community events at the Meetup itself!
