Discussion Group: Habits and How They Affect Products

  • This location is shown only to members

Welcome to the very first Action Design Discussion Group! In this meetup, we will holding an interactive discussion among group members on behavioral psychology and design topics.

This month, we'll be focusing on habits. Research has determined that about 40% of our day consists of habits, meaning that nearly half of our life is on autopilot. For a product or startup to find success with its users, it must find its way into the automatic behaviors that make up their habits.

How is this accomplished, though? What do habits consist of? How do they begin and become ingrained in our daily life?

In this discussion, we will focus on some of the best research, literature and real world examples of habits and share each other's experiences in leveraging such information in the real world. We will send out some materials to review before the meeting and provide an outline for the conversation, but the goal is to have a wide ranging discussion of your insights, thoughts and applications on the topic.

Not every informal-ish discussion is also informative, but this one pulled that off. Terrific!

I am sorry that I cannot make it in the end... looking forward to making the next one! I freed up my spot.

Is it correct that there are only 12 spots for this meetup? Is the venue just small?

    August 26, 2013

    • Erik J.

There are 30 spots and we currently have 17 on the waiting list. This is meant to be an active group discussion, as opposed to the speaker presentations in our usual meetups, so we are keeping the attendance small to ensure ease of conversation.

Thanks for the response. That make sense.

For everyone who has RSVP'd, please update your status if anything has changed and you can't make it tonight. We have a waiting list for this meetup, so let's make room for them if you won't be able to attend. Thanks!

Is there a good website/digital archive that we can store and categorize/section off some of this action design related articles/resources?

With Pearltrees you can team up to work on a project/topic. Folders are grouped like a mind map in the native app (or a network of "pearls") - in web browser the bookmarks look like folder stacks. E.g.: http://www.pearltrees...

I use Delicious to manage my personal links. I'm not sure what the best option would be for group use, but I'll look into it, as that would be cool to have.

Sounds like an important and another provocative topic.

Use this link to access some resources we've put together on the subject: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1b-ugGdOAweEZqvLy3mO6WkkkLRtEeUY9Hm2Sn6-6M4U/edit#

There's no requirement to have read these beforehand, but they provide background on the topic if you'd like to learn more ahead of time.
