Small group discussion: why users struggle to manage money and how to help them

On March 1st, we'll have a small group discussion about money and personal finance. We'll start by talking about the challenges our users (all of us) face with managing their money - and use that as a jumping off point for discussing behavioral and technology approaches to help people better manages their finances.

Sorry to have missed the meetup earlier this month. I wanted to share the FinCapDev hackathon happening in NYC in two weeks. FinCapDev is a mobile app development competition that helps underserved Americans make smarter financial choices and achieve better access to financial services. Cash prizes are awarded and I'm sure there will be a lot of talented, smart minds there.

Thanks everyone for coming out. I put together a few resources in a Google Doc covering behavioral economics and finance:

Please feel free to add comments or additional links as well as uploading pictures on Meetup. And hope to see you all in April for Michael Chasen.

Hey thanks for these, Daniel, I come to learn about how to apply these concepts to health and I never leave disappointed! The information about the Return-To-Savings initiative is here if others are interested - as you said there are some design methodologies that can turn the tide of overwhelming societal biases toward unhealth (financial, physical, emotional) - Much appreciated! I'll post on this research soon for my medical colleagues :)

The meetup went well. About a dozen people or so. I have used Design Thinking to research and build solutions around intensely personal subjects like unemployment, sexual assault and high-risk behavior in teens... so I was interested in observing some of the parallels to personal finance through this discussion. There was a mix of people from finance service, health and design backgrounds so it was and interesting discussion that resulted in some surprising ideas, I think. I have a couple of pictures (just from the back of the room... no faces but Dan's but I'm not sure where to post them here.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
