Thank you for helping get people's attention with the early date and time settings, Carlos. A little while ago, I changed it to April 29th, but it doesn't change the fact that they warn that they expect to sell out of available slots by February or March, and there just might be a chance all slots may sell even earlier! Anyone out there planning to go, please sign up soon!

I've wanted to start back into Triathlons in TX - but what is the thing here with having packet pick-up 1 day and the race another (with no race-day packet pickup). Not just this race but I noticed it here 1st. If coming from the opposite side of town, forcing me to drive in twice in order to race really is enough of a pain (and cost of time, fuel, tolls, etc) to stop me from signing up to this and another race. Can anyone explain that one to me?

Yeah, makes no sense but they are strict about it.
I've only done the relay thou.

Bummer. Is a show-stopper for me then. Too bad, I liked the placement & timing (late April) of that race too...

There is packet pick-up the Saturday before the race in town (Galleria area) and the day before the race (Kemah). Two pick-up options before race day is the standard. Race day packet pick-up is rare, simply because of the volume of people and the early start time. I agree, I do check where packet pick-up is before I sign up for a race. Having done Kemah twice, I can tell you it's a great race, very well organized, and this year there is great swag!

Thanks Catherine...It was just really werid to me...I've done more than a dozen races (PA, WV, OH, and NY - previous home) and every one had race day pickup...I didn't realize it was normal here. I'll think about it...but I live near Fresno - way South & West so it's far (hr+ each way pickup & race), so I'll just have to decide if it's worth that for a Sprint (all I'll be ready for). Maybe I'll see if they need volunteers with kayaks for the swim ;-)

Julie, Perhaps you can contact the Race Director for race day packet pickup.

I am interested in Oly distance - which has a boat start. Anyone know how many feet drop from the boat's edge? Not looking for any high heart-rate start for my swim. TIA!

    Hello Everyone,

My name is Aaron Palaian and I'm the race director of the Kemah Triathlon. I wanted to answer a couple of your questions (sorry it's taken me a while to find this posting). Julie, with an event that will most likely be close to 2,000 triathletes the Kemah triathlon is now one of the biggest in Texas next to the Austin Triathlon and CapTex Tri. Of course IM is still larger too. That being said, it's a logistical nightmare to have race morning packet pickup...

for a race that is this big. However, we still offer race morning pickup for 75-100 people that pay an additional fee ($10-$15 I think) at time of signup. As for packet pickups... we have to be careful not to have to many prior for many reasons. 1) Spreads us too thin. It's a ton of work to put this on and volunteers and personnel are only going to help for so long. We start setup 5 days prior to the event on site. 2) By limiting packet pickup it makes the sponsors happier because the...

1 early packet pickup we do (Fleet Feet) has more people than if we spread it out over 2-4 more. 3) By limiting the amount of packet pickups it draws people to the expo which is better for athletes, sponsors, and the race overall.

If you look at any triathlon over 1,500 they typically have an expo and that's the only place you can get the packet, especially if you're doing an IM.

Mee Ra - The jump from the boat is 2-4 feet depending on when you jump off. FUN STUFF

    WE ARE ALMOST SOLD OUT

I understand...was just a pain being from way over in Ft Bend County. I picked another race but was still thinking of volunteering. I don't think I have the right type of kayak (lake boat not ocean) for your swim though...too bad as that part is fun. Maybe will still try something else though.
