Hurricane Sandy cut a few breaches through Fire Island when she hit in October of 2012. Some of the breaches were closed up by man but one still remains about 1.5 miles west of Smith Point County Park.

Let's meet in the Smith Point parking lot after 5pm. There's a parking fee if you arrive before then. Park in the southwest corner of the lot which would put you by the traffic circle you encounter shortly after getting off the bridge. Be on the lookout for a blue minivan with a rooftop kayak carrier.

We'll be starting our walk at exactly 5:45 so please be prompt.  Please be prepared to walk around 4 miles through beach sand.  Low tide should be around 7:50pm which should make for excellent walking conditions by the waters edge.

I find that it's a good idea to utilize some form of backpack where you can keep a drink, snacks and maybe a camera.  Since we're walking on the beach, it would also make a good spot to keep your shoes if you decide to go barefoot in the sand.  :-)

Sounds just about right. It was about 1.7 miles from the ranger station and about 2 miles one way. Total trip was about 4 miles.

Blown away by Sandy's impact or by the wind we experienced? Lol

Thanks Rose. I've been trying to upload the group pics but my laptop doesn't have the correct input for my cameras card. :-( I'll have those group pics up by Sunday night at the latest.

To bad more people couldn't stay afterwards for the music.

    1 · July 2, 2014

    • Chris

We had a fast group, a medium group and a slow group. Looks like the fast group kept on walking towards the beach hut for the music. I hope everyone had a good time. In less than two weeks we are having a dedicated event at the beach hut for country night. :-)

I am sorry to cancel last minute Chris...but have been called into work tonight. I was at the beach earlier today and you and the rest will have a beautiful evening for the hike/walk. Enjoy, I look forward to next time.

Sorry you missed it. It was a little breezy on the way there, but the wind was at your back on the way back which was awesome.

Hi everyone. I wanted to thank everyone for coming out today to see the breach for our inaugural event! We had about 25 people come out and I hope I got a chance to introduce myself to everyone today. It was nice meeting everyone. I'm going to post the group shot pics as soon as possible. Please feel free to post your own pics too. :-)

Chris; I am very glad for the turn-out and that your group is getting such a great response. I look forward to meeting all these enthusiastic people. May I suggest a word of caution here though... I live in the area and the outer beach of Smiths Point has been recently closed to the 'car' traffic because of the Piping Plover eggs. It might be advisable to clear with the Parks Dept. that a group this large will be allowed access en masse. Those Park police and federal plover people can be a bit over the top about 'exposure' to the hatchlings.

    June 24, 2014

    • Chris

Yes, it's to the breach which takes us on FINS. I assume Veronica's concern was that we would be such a large group walking to the breach at the same time. As long as there are no signs prohibiting us then I don't see a problem. I will take a walk down there a day or two before this meetup and report back with my findings. :-)

    • skye

walking by the waters edge shouldn't be any problems - and not running thru the dunes where the birds are ... lol

      July 1, 2014

  • karen

    Same time?

    June 30, 2014

    • Chris

Yes Karen. I set the meetup time for 5:15 but we won't be walking until 5:45. I can't wait to meet everyone tomorrow!

I would have loved to join you, but I work Tues nites :(

    1 · June 26, 2014

  • Veronica

Plovers do not distinguish between east or west when laying eggs. My concern was that because of having a 'group' if there were plover eggs on the west side the FINS would not allow us to proceed. It was just a concern since they have done that in the past at other locations ( Orient point state Pk in particular- which has NO car traffic). Great idea Chris about a trial walk or if not; I am sure a phone call will work too.

    2 · June 25, 2014

    • skye

I'm sure we can't cause as much distruction as incremental weather - just leave footprints - right?

      June 25, 2014

there are literally hundreds of people up and down the that beach everyday walking to the new inlet

    June 15, 2014

We won't be walking until 5:45. Being this is our very first meetup, I wanted to allot some extra time to go over things and get acquainted with everyone. :-)

This meetup group only went live 2 weeks ago and I planned this inaugural event for 1 month after we went live, which is about 2 weeks from now. I was expecting to have about 15 members so far and maybe 1 or 2 attendees for this event. As of now, we have 98 members and 21 people going. That is outstanding and blows my expectations out of the water! That's over 20% of our members attending this walk. Unbelievable! I am very excited for this walk and I look forward to meeting all of you real soon!

Looking forward to the Smith Point walk!

Bring something to eat. We'll plop ourselves down on the sand when we get to the breach. :-)

There is a restaurant by the parking lot where you can find some food, drinks and live music after the walk. The restaurant isn't part of this meetup but feel free to go afterwards anyway. :-)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
