Giuffrida Park Hike - Meriden 3/23/14

Giuffrida Park was originally part of an area farmed in the late 1600's and early 1700's by Jonathan Gilbert and later Captain Andrew Belcher. The property was offered for sale and the Connecticut Light and Power Co. (CL&P) purchased it in order to provide itself with the land to cross high voltage lines into the Westfield section of Middletown and beyond. CL&P then sold the rest of the land to the city, which bought it under the open spaces program. The reservoir remains a backup water source today.

Folks, Julie n I hiked the trail yesterday. You will not need spikes or stabilizers. Most of the snow ice is gone. On the two challenging downhills Charlie n I created an alternative route. DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE CONDITIONS, there are some muddy spots but you won't be on ice!!! I hope to see you all tomorrow. Jim B, Moderate Hike Leader.

I will do my best to be there, I really want to get out there and get into better shape.

Hi This is Charlie. The hike is safe & has very little snow & ice on it. Some people are over reacting to the issue of a minor amount of snow or ice. Myself & Jim Bornholdt rerouted one of the trails to avoid some icy spots. By the time Sunday rolls around, there will be just a small amount of snow if any at all on the hike. Come down & enjoy the hike & views. There will be many nice people attending. Thanks Charlie

    2 · March 21, 2014

  • Donna K.

I also don't have spikes, but plan to be hiking at the social pace. Do you think it will be Ok ?

    March 21, 2014

  • Julie

I'm with Hillary, no spikes either.

    1 · March 21, 2014

    • Beth

      Bummer, I don't either.

      March 21, 2014

  • Hillary

I'm bowing out - I don't have spikes. I will wait until the spring really comes.

    1 · March 21, 2014

  • Hillary

Do you think we will need spikes for ice?

    March 20, 2014

    • Jim B.

Hillary, I'd bring them cause we may still encounter some snow spots. Charlie and I have a new trail to bypass the two icy downhills.

Hi Chellah I predict it will be close to clear by Sunday, the next three days are all supposed to be warm. Hope I'm not wrong!

I'm confused - I thought hikes were the 1st and 3rd Sunday's of the month. Wasnt last week the 2nd Sunday and this is the 1st? Posting this March 13th. I ask because I had built my parenting plan specifically so I would not have kids those weekends!

I dont know but I dont wanna miss it.

Since Charlie was in the Caribbean the 1st Sunday he moved both March hikes up a week.

It would be so nice to take a hike and talk to new friends.
