You are quiet welcome Judy. I should be at that hike as well. I wasn't at the last one, as I'm fighting off bronchitis. Figured it was best to pass. I do the social hike so hope to see you there

It was my first time and I must say I had a great work out. thank you for that. quite organized and that is great. I was, however, emotionally unprepared for the pace and the hills. ... I am considering coming again and doing the social hike. However, I am hesitant for one reason. I did not feel very welcomed. I was alone and briefly chatted with a few folks as we hiked and I felt like I initiated each interchange which was not very personal or engaging. I like meet up events where people reach out, welcome you, ask you who you are, from where, and hang with you a bit. So, because I felt "ignored" I did not go to lunch. ..There is not need to respond. I am just sharing my feelings. I am a big girl. I love the contra dances in Branford because of the warm welcome and kindness of strangers when we dance. I am new to that also. So...just putting that out there. Be well--thank you Charlie for organizing........ Peace and Love.

Judy, it was my first time, too, and falling back to the social group was EXACTLY the right thing to do. I still walked 4+ miles and exercised for about 2 hours. Because we could all breathe, we laughed, made rude jokes, and had a great time WHILE exercising. EXAMPLE: What's a malapropism? ANSWER: A special kind of pun where the speaker screws up but doesn't realize the mistake, like, "Ferdinand Magellan circumcised the globe with a 100-ft clipper." (!) So we told some more inappropriate jokes, like the "testicles of calamari" and had a great old time. Again, because we could breathe! Anything beyond social is a work-out group, a laudable goal, but not what sine would expect the first time. I mean I want to be an Intermediate someday, too, but I was much happier to swallow my shame and have fun, too. And Jim's right -- lunch was fabulous. I have been to contra dances, too, and loved that also. You just have to know the rules. All people risk something coming to both. Keep trying!

Judy, I suggest you give the group another try. I'm merely suggesting it. I've been hiking with Charlie for over two years now. I find that when I'm hiking, its hard to hold a conversation. I'm hard of hearing, and find it extremely difficult to hold a decent conversation while hiking. I have to really focus and one sound, and that's tough. Especially when you have many feet stomping on the ground and shoveling with the leaves or snow, you have the hiking poles hitting on the ground etc... Sounds hearing people take for granted. So, that is why I'm usually somewhat quiet on the trail. To save frustration, I'm not one to go around and saying "Hi, nice to meet you, I'm hard of hearing." to people I don't know (course I think I just did, lol). But now, I've had three ear surgeries. With the most recent being in April. I'm hearing sounds that I've never even heard before. So that's why I'm quiet on the trails.

I really enjoyed the hike, exploring a part of CT I've never seen, and have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the intensity of the moderate group's hike. Judy, I know I talked very little because the work out was so good that when we had a break in the hike, I found myself wanting to look around and take in the scenery more than I wanted to talk. It was my first event with the group, but easing into the group slowly, so I chose not to go to lunch the first time. I plan on doing future hikes and socials. Great overall experience.
