Good choice of book. It is does not fire on all cylinders like some of Balzac, Dostoevsky or David Foster Wallace. But still a very intelligent and well written book. The contemporary material was meaty stuff - the complexity of how whites have responded to decolonisation in different ways, the father being justifiably reactionary and the daughter seeming to be on the side of the future, yet also being somehow obsequious in a way that I find hard to accept. The subtlety and lack of ideological posturing in the novel seems to be absent in Australian fiction about colonisation and land tenure. Very different situations but I've yet to read any Australian fiction writers who approach these issues with such subtlety and impartiality? Overall, psychologically penetrating and a great window into contemporary Africa.
