Hike to Mt. Marshall

Meet at the trailhead at 7:45 a.m. for an 8:00 a.m. start.

This hike is about 14 miles round trip.  We have about 5.5 miles hiking in to Flowed lands and then 1.5 miles up Herbert Brook and it's many pools to the Marshall summit.  The pace is moderate.

Please bring at least two liters of water, a filter, lunch, snacks, raingear and - as it's May - hat, gloves and fleece.  Traction devices as well as there may be lingering snow on the summits.

DEC limits groups to no more than 15 in the High Peaks, so let's have some fun...!!

If anyone has a time constraint or other issue with the slower pace, please PM me.

Why have anyone on a waiting list lets just break into 2 groups?

Great Idea, Claude. As it was your idea, would you be willing to lead the second group?

To all participants: please let me know whether you are a faster hiker or a slower one. I state this because we need to break into two groups in order to do this hike. DEC will not allow us to hike in one large group; rather, they will require one group to go ahead and the other to wait ONE HOUR before progressing.

This way, you know which group you are in and can take off with your leader. I'm leading the SLOWER group, Claude the FASTER one.

It would be helpful for a definition of slower or faster hiking...

I would probably classify myself as a faster hiker.

I am a faster hiker. I will go in either group if needed.

Thank you, George. I average about 1.5 mph, perhaps slightly faster on a flat, mudless trail. I know plenty of others that hike 2.5 mph or faster. My pace is a Slower Moderate, around 1.5 - 2 mph..

I'm not sure what I'd classify myself as so I'll say slower.

My plan would be a steady pace not a real fast pace if that is any help. We will try and be on the trail by 7:45 am. FYI I have been on this trail in from the Upper Work, plan on mud.

I'll probably go as a "steady pace not a real fast pace" hiker.

Since I've yet to do a 14 mile hike, I should be counted in the slower group... thanks!

It's imperative that everyone joining in on this hike be in SHAPE for it. Comfortably, everyone should be in shape for a 10- 12 mile hike. I don't care how you get there, whether you hike, run, cycle or some other aerobic exercise. If you are not in shape for this outing, then please reassess your skills. Thank you.

DEC allows 15 people per hike; I have changed the requirements to reflect 15. Also the meet time has been altered to 7:45 a.m. instead of 6:45 a.m. Start time is 15 minutes later.

I have been averaging around 2 mph - and faster than that if it is flat. However, I can adjust to a little slower or faster usually.

Rebecca, for me, I find it better to be the "fast" one in a "slow" group, than the "slow" one in a "fast" group. This "wisdom" from someone who calls himself "Losteddie." :-)

From what I see it is now only one group (more fun) If we need to break into two group we will.

Anyone driving by exit 28 of the Northway? Or anyone need a ride between Schroon Lake and Marshall?

I hiked Wright the other day and it was clean and clear. However, a half day of thunderstorms has caused rivers to run high... I think it should be good.

There's no lingering snow, save on parts of Marcy and Algonquin.

It was a beautiful, warm and clear day for hiking. The trail was a little tricky, but we prevailed without any huge mishaps.
