MONTHLY MEETING - JULY - Finding Meaning Through Volunteer Work

As active retirees, we have a lot of time on our hands, and a lot of knowledge and experience to share.  But sometimes, it's difficult to find a volunteer opportunity that matches our skills.  Join us for a presentation by Experience Matters, a non-profit organization whose mission is to connect experienced adults (isn't it nice they don't call us older adults!) and their expertise with nonprofit organizations.  Check out their website www.experiencemattersaz.org

I agree with William, I would like to share my experience in building a team of volunteers.

I have a better idea. Rather than everyone take a passive "wait and see" attitude, why don't some achiever/proactive members (non-watchers) join me and we will adopt a shared governance model. I learned long ago, if it is important, we will find a way. If it is not important, we will find an excuse. I do not consider myself to be the "center of the universe", nor do I believe all good ideas originate with me. I would welcome the opportunity to associate with proactive, like-minded people in this effort. I do have some prior experience and I could get things started, to form a team network. By the way, I did talk with Trish, and she is supportive of our efforts and will provide assistance. Carol and Cooki , thank you VERY MUCH for your positive support.

Thanks, Martie. I, too, enjoy being a worker bee more than an administrator. Nevertheless, we need to start somewhere. I will prepare some kind of survey, assessing individual interest and willingness to participate. The central question will be :Does this organization wish to expand into providing service to others, or do we want to be a social/self help type of club ? It will be interesting to see where our member preferences lie. At this time, I am "up to my ears" in two other major projects. By the latter part of next week, I should be able to devote some serious time to this. I would hope to involve many of our interested members in the planning, so we have a "broad-based" input (shared governance), so it is OUR idea, not MY idea.

Bill, count me in. However, I'm a worker-bee not an administrator... Once things are set up and you're ready for action, let me know where and when to show up, roll up my sleeves and get to it!

Thanks to Bill for being willing to pick up the leadership role on a volunteer project. Bill, when you get your questionnaire or other materials together and ready to send, just go the the "More" tab above, select "Files" and look for the roster. It has all of the email addresses. Unfortunately, the email tool included with meetup software doesn't allow attachments, so you'll have to send them through your own email software. If you have any questions, call me at the phone number listed in the roster. I'll be home Friday evening and all day Sunday. Again, Thanks.

As I indicated at the meeting, this could be a project we adopt as a group. This is not rocket science, simply survey membership for interest and ask how much time they are willing to contribute, and secure additional relevant info. Then match up our time commitment to a project, recommended by Trish Phillips at Experience Matters. We need to be careful not to accept an assignment with stringent "time sensitivity". I trust our current leaders have the motivation to "iron out" the rest of the details. It is not complicated and need not be risky, is the current membership willing to support and participate in this volunteer effort ? This is called : "giving back to your community". It would be a non-threatening and nice way to expose individuals to the broad aspects of volunteering, enabling each individual to experience precisely what is involved, and also provide our organization an opportunity to "pull together", collectively. What say you, individual members ???

As I mentioned yesterday, the way things move forward here is for someone to step up and be responsible for organizing the entire project. Bill, are you willing take on this responsibility?

I enjoyed the afternoon. The people were warm and bright. There was some really good info there. There is always such a nice feeling when you come to a group function.

While the subject and speaker were great I would have liked more info on volunteering for such things as mentoring, tutoring, food pantries. I don't want to be a boss. Been there, done that.

If you're looking for something more traditional, just call the school, food pantry, hospital near you and ask. You won't have to look far.

      July 10, 2013

    • Jamie & Bob K.

Oh, and I sent out an email about the food pantry that needs volunteers.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
