Advanced ESL: Improve Your Graduate-Level English

Have you taken the most advanced ESL classes the city has to offer, but still don't feel ready to get that masters, MBA, or PhD? Do you feel like you speak and understand English too well for ESL classes, but not well enough to succeed on the GRE, GMAT, TOEFL and other exams?

I'm here to help!

This group meets Sundays at 55 Broad Street (4/5 to Wall St or 2/3 to Wall St). Each 1.5 hour session includes 2-3 of the following:

Grammar lessons related to essay writing, beating standardized tests, and academic and business writing

Vocabulary lessons with emphasis on academic vocabulary that appears in textbooks, in business writing, and on standardized tests

Real-world editing -- a writing sample is provided or everyone writes a short composition, and we correct the passages for grammar, idioms, and cultural appropriateness.

Reading comprehension practice -- We read a selection from a standardized test or from a high-lexile publication such as The Economist, The New Yorker, etc., and answer questions that require the kind of close reading required for the GMAT and GRE, and for writing incisive academic essays.

Presentation and class participation practice -- Practice public speaking and speaking up in class.

This is not a test prep class, but would be very effective if taken concurrently with a test prep class, or prior to beginning your GRE/GMAT studies. (You may also be interested in my other Meetup group, Unlock the GRE with Perfect Scorer Jen Dziura.)

New members are welcome anytime. This is an ongoing workshop, so you don't have to worry about missing previous classes. You don't need to bring anything except pen and paper, but feel free to bring:

• a sentence or short paragraph (from your personal reading) that you'd like explained

• a word you can't understand the definition of

• a short piece of your own writing that you'd like corrected as part of the group

Only 12 spots are available per class. Eventually, there will be a charge for this class, but right now this group is free while we build up the membership.

I hope to meet you soon!

About Me: I am the author of a grammar, logic, and reading comp book specifically for non-native speakers taking the GMAT (I even went to India to do research!) as well as two sets of vocabulary flashcards for the GRE. I'm also co-author of or contributor to more than ten other test prep books. I have perfect scores on the GRE and SAT, and a perfect 51 verbal on the GMAT. I have helped thousands of students over more than a decade of experience in the test prep world. I explain things clearly, and I'm pretty nice, if I do say so myself! I was the first person in my family to go to college, so I understand the struggles of people who are trying hard to succeed.  - Jennifer Dziura

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
