Bicycles for Humanity Charity Ride (price is the donation)

Laroche Park (map)

Selected By: Erin

(the "price" of this activity is a donation which goes directly to B4H. If you would like to join us at a different donation fee - no problem! Just contact us so we know you're coming!)

Every Month:

On the last Monday of each month we ride to raise money for this great cause! Donate any amount, but be sure to make this a monthly tradition! Each month we will meet in a different area of the city and set out for a bike ride. Most routes are out-and-back routes where you can chose the distance that's right for you or meet others who match your pace! After our ride we'll head out to the local watering hole and take some time to learn more about this unique charity and those who support it. Meet new friends with big hearts, share cycling tips and be a part of something special!

If biking is not your speed, please feel free to join us with rollerblades, running shoes or your dog!

This Month: Canal Tour!

Ride with us along the Rideau Canal! Bring your bike or blades and choose between a 20, 16 or a 12km loop with the group or at your own pace. At 5:00 we set out from the parking lot at Pretoria Bridge and head south. Ride or roll with fellow Ripple Members or set out to challenge yourself at your own pace. Take your mini-map provided by Ripple Adventure and select the route of your choice. A fairly level course, this trail is great for riders and rollers of all abilities. The route takes us along either side of the Rideau Canal, or alternately the Rideau River! On our return to the rally point, we'll roll over to our reserved table at The WORKS! for a quick snack, a drink and to catch up with new friends!

Runners can choose from an out and back route with a distance of their choice, a 3km loop or a 6km loop.

Why B4H?

We chose Bicycles for Humanity because they are a volunteer based organization, therefore each dollar donated makes it directly to the cause! They also have key contacts abroad to ensure their program is implemented properly. They take donated bicycles and turn them into a sustainable business that in turn supports a community through education and health care.

How it Works:

* B4H collects donated mountain bikes and raises funds to ship them to disadvantaged communities in Africa.
* Unlike other organizations, Bicycles for Humanity is 100% volunteer driven so all of the money goes directly towards shipping bicycles to Africa.
* With the funds they purchase a 40ft shipping container and pack it full of the donated bikes, tools, supplies and other relevant goods.
* They ship the container out to a community in Africa. The shipment container is converted into a bike workshop that employs 5+.
* Donated bikes go to healthcare workers to service outlying communities and students who need to travel great distances to reach the classrooms. Other bikes are sold to members of the community to generate income to invest back into development programs, pay for shop salaries and supplies and save up for contributing to costs of next shipment of bikes.
* By donating to B4H you are supporting a sustainable business model that enables a community!
* Just $20 covers the shipping fees for one bicycle to a community in need!

"A bike can change a life and help build a future for a community in need!" -B4H
