This trip is for Advanced hikers. There will be a waitlist for you to put your name on.
I have reserved the group campsite at the Hole in The Wall campground in Mohave for Friday June 14th Saturday 15th, leave on Sunday. This is at (5,600 foot elevation), so it will still be cool weather. The cost is 5 dollars per person via Paypal. Send your payment to [masked] & you will be moved up.
H.I.T.W. has a covered pavilion with picnic tables, a large fire pit, a large barbeque grill, potable water, (but bring your own water to drink for 2 days.) large open area for camping, . The vault toilets are shared with the Equestrian site. We will have to bring our own wood..
This trip involves hiking around the area with the cool Hole in the Wall, The Mitchell Caverns are still closed due to Calif. budget problems :(
Real Hikes would be Silver Peak 6395' 8.5 miles out & back. I would do Granite, but that involves more trail finding/bushwhacking then I care to do. Silver Peak has a trail. We could do Eagle Rocks which is a short 2 miles of exploring the giant boulders, much like Joshua Trees.
Another one would be Table Top Mountain loop 7 mile out & back right near the campsites. I like this hike. We did this 3 years ago. It involves climbing, scrambling up & around boulders which is not hard. Once you get to the top, it's a big surprise! There are plants, trees & it's completely flat & you just hike around the top checking out the place! Very cool.
There's also Quail spring Basin, an easy lollipop loop 5.9 miles R/T with two side trips around granite formations with opportunities for climbing boulders & peaks. "Immense monzogranite boulder mounds dot the route." OK I copied that part!! LOL Another easy one is the Crystal Spring Overlook, a short but steep canyon hike to a mountain spring.
The site holds 50 people!! No plus ones unless approved.
We can also drive over on the way out to see the Lava Tube & the Giant sand dunes. Practice rolling down them. Bring your Boogie Board or a skim board to slide down them
Directions: The park is located in the eastern Mojave Desert off of Interstate 40, 56 miles west of Needles, 116 miles east of Barstow, and 16 miles northwest of the Essex Road exit. Located at an elevation of 4,300 feet, the park is surrounded by one of the newest National Parks, Mojave National Preserve.
Be prepared to travel in the desert! The nearest fuel station to the park is 24 miles away in Fenner. Carry water in your vehicle in case of an unexpected situation. Food is not available at the park, so plan ahead for meals.
Climate: The best weather occurs in the Spring and Fall, but, because of the 4,300 foot elevation at the visitor center, temperatures usually remain moderate throughout the year.
