Come join us for a fun packed day of adventure in the San Jacinto Wilderness. Tahquitz Peak at 8,826 feet is the second highest peak in the San Jacinto mountains after San Jacinto itself. The summit overlooks Idyllwild and is guarded by dramatic granite buttresses most notably Tahquitz Rock or Lily Rock. Hikers use several pronunciations but the correct Cahuilla pronunciation is "taw-kwish".

I will acquire a wilderness permits for 12 people and plan it going to good use. PLEASE only sign up if you seriously plan on going. No shows or last minute cancellations deny others the chance at a great and memorable day. If interest is high I will do my best to pull a few more wilderness permits and raise the hiker cap. We will meet at 8:15 A.M. and start shortly after.

DISTANCE: This hike is approximately 11+ miles as planned, with about 3000 feet of altitude gain/loss. High elevation point of the hike will be at Tahquitz Peak lookout at 8,826 feet. DIFFICULTY: This is a modestly strenuous hike. ABOUT THE HIKE: We will begin our adventure by meeting at the Humber Park parking lot, which can be reached off of Hwy 243, north on Pinecrest Ave. to Fern Valley Rd. At Fern Valley Road veer left and continue to the Humber Park Devil’s Slide Trailhead. Check the map link above for a printable map. We will meet at 8:15 A.M. and start the hike shortly after. We'll ascend up Devil's Slide Trail 1,600 feet in the first 2.5 miles, then veer right at Saddle Junction onto the PCT (there are a number of trails at this junction) and head up another 1,000 feet in altitude and 1.4 miles to South Ridge Trail Junction. We will head right on South Ridge .4 miles to a short spur up to Tahquitz Summit and the Lookout Tower. We will rest at the lookout, eat lunch and savor the awesome view and great company. We will head back the same way we came taking the PCT but will take a side trail that heads through Little Tahquitz Valley where the beautiful Reeds Meadow & Skunk Cabbage Meadow are located. It's a short distance longer and a great trail with a different view back to Saddle Junction. Back at Saddle Junction we will descend down Devil's Slide back to Humber Park,

Bring a lunch, snack, water. Plan on an all day event.

Recommended Items: It can get very cold so layers of clothing are important. Bring water, a lunch, snacks and anything else you need to be comfortable and safe..Bring extra water/electrolytes. Hydrate before and during the hike.Bring high-energy snacks
Bring charged cell phone, personal first aid kit, flashlight, and whistle
Wear hiking shoes with traction - Trails can be steep, slippery and/or rocky
Wear and bring hat, sunscreen and appropriate attire/gear based on terrain and weather conditions. Participants are solely responsible for their regular and emergency medicines, including, importantly for food, plant and sting allergies, whether or not they have a history of such allergies.

Hey everyone. I sent for our wilderness permit and the rangers called me back and said the early permits had all been issued because of the holiday weekend. However they did say I could probably get one the evening before at 4:00 PM at the ranger station or at 8:00 AM on the 26th, hike day. They are only giving out 10 more permits total. The chances are good we can get a permit but if not we can definitely get a permit to go up a different trail, the south ridge trail to Tahquitz Peak. Paula Melo has graciously volunteered to try and get a permit the evening before as she will be in town overnight. If that fails I will make an attempt on hike day the 26th at 8:00 AM. If all else fails we can take South Ridge Trail to the peak for sure. It is 4 miles up and 4 back but I can add a loop at the top for extra mileage if needed. I am moving back the hike time to 8:15 for the permit situation. Thanks for your kind understanding.

Great news everyone. Paula Melo was able to get our wilderness permit this evening at the Ranger Station in Idyllwild. So we are good to go tomorrow morning out of Humber Park up Devils Slide to the peak. I will arrive about 7:30 AM and we will get going as soon as everyone arrives or at 8:15 AM at the latest. Please give Paula a big thank you tomorrow morning for being so kind and helping us all out. See you all in at the trail head!

Is the limit on #of people due to the permit? Based on the picture I did this hike last time I was in idly wild ...I did not get a permit because apparently ignorance is bliss :)

If you can get two Permits Paula that would be awesome! You may have to go after 4:00 PM on Saturday but try earlier if you can. The ranger station is on the main drag through town and easy to find. If you get two post it like you said and I will open up the hike to the people waiting. Thanks Paula!
